Vanity Fair's Hitchcock Shots Compared To The Originals

I'm such a big Hitchcock fan I was giddy with excitement when I saw that Vanity Fair magazine opted to recreate some of his most famous and iconic scenes from 11 of his movies in their Hollywood Portfolio issue a few months ago.

The March issue of the magazine, who has a tradition of doing some fabulous photo editorials, continued to impress with their recreation of 11 of Hitchcock's most famous scenes in which 21 hottest hollywood actors are shot by four regular Vanity Fair photographers. The results are fabulous, and you can see them for yourself below followed by original hollywood stills of the movies.

The fun facts below the recreated photos are courtesy of Vanity Fair.

Dial M for Murder, 1954

Above: Charlize Theron. Photograph by Norman Jean Roy.
The scene in which Charles Alexander Swann (Dawson) attempts to strangle Margot Mary Wendice (Kelly), only to be himself stabbed with a pair of scissors, caused Hitchcock great anxiety. Although the entire film was shot in just 36 days, this single scene required a full week of rehearsals and multiple takes to get the choreography and timing right.

Rear Window, 1954

Above: Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem. Photograph by Norman Jean Roy.
The film has been called a superb commentary on watching films, on loneliness, and on obsession, as well as a sharp critique of the male psyche. But at its essence, Rear Window is a paean to old-fashioned snooping. "Sure he's a snooper, but aren't we all?”said Hitchcock.“I'll bet you that nine out of ten people, if they see a woman across the courtyard undressing for bed, or even a man puttering around in his room, will stay and look; no one turns away and says,‘It's none of my business.”

Marnie, 1964

Above: Naomi Watts. Photograph by Julian Broad.
It seemed to many on the set that Hitchcock was concerned less with the production of Marnie than with his efforts to woo its star. He sent champagne to her dressing room every day, and freely confessed his love. After Hedren finally rejected him, he dropped her, and refused ever to utter her name again. Did we mention that Marnie is a psychodrama about frigidity?

Rebecca, 1940

Above: Keira Knightley and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Photograph by Julian Broad.
Rebecca was the first film Hitchcock made after producer David O. Selznick lured him to Hollywood with promises of a large budget and a high salary. Hitchcock proposed several alterations to the ghost story, adding elements of irony and dark humor. Selznick demanded a re-write faithful to the novel. Although Hitchcock later dismissed the film as “not a Hitchcock picture,” it was one of his most successful, and the only one to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

Strangers on a Train, 1951

Above: Emile Hirsch and James McAvoy. Photograph by Art Streiber.
Hitchcock may have exaggerated when he called “the ineffectiveness of the two main actors”one of the film's main flaws, but had Guy (Granger) been played by a stronger figure (Hitchcock's first choice was William Holden), he might have been more sympathetic as a hero. It's hard not to root for the villain (Walker), especially when he has his hands around the neck of Guy's fat, loathsome, unfaithful wife, and begins to squeeze. Then again, that may have been Hitchcock's intent all along.

Vertigo, 1958

Above: Renée Zellweger. Photograph by Norman Jean Roy.
Hitchcock's blackhearted valentine to San Francisco is perhaps his most fully realized portrayal of the themes that haunted his films—obsession, paranoia, the transference of guilt, spurned love. And, of course, necrophilia: “I was intrigued by the hero’s attempts to re-create the image of a dead woman through another one who's alive,” said Hitchcock when asked to describe the plot.

Above: The original still of Kim Novak. © Paramount Pictures.

To Catch a Thief, 1955

Above: Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. Photograph by Norman Jean Roy.
Grace Kelly was the quintessential cold Hitchcock blonde. Hitchcock called her sexual appeal “indirect.” “Sex should not be advertised,” Hitchcock said. “An English girl, looking like a schoolteacher, is apt to get into a cab with you and, to your surprise, she’ll probably pull a man's pants open.”

Above: The original still of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. Paramount Pictures/Photofest.

Lifeboat, 1944

Above, from left: Tang Wei, Josh Brolin, Casey Affleck, Eva Marie Saint, Ben Foster, Omar Metwally, and Julie Christie. Photograph by Mark Seliger.
Lifeboat presented a difficult challenge to Hitchcock’s determination to appear in a single shot in each of his films. “I thought of being a dead body floating past the lifeboat, but I was afraid I'd sink,” he said. Hitchcock was sincerely worried about his weight at the time, and had undertaken a strenuous diet. His solution to the cameo problem: he appeared in a newspaper read by one of the boat’s passengers, photographed before and after his diet in an advertisement for a fictional weight-loss drug.

Above: The original still: From left: Walter Slezak, Mary Anderson, Hume Cronyn, Tallulah Bankhead, John Hodiak, Henry Hull, Heather Angel, William Bendix, Canada Lee. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp./Photofest.

The Birds, 1963

Above: Jodie Foster. Photograph by Norman Jean Roy.
Hitchcock said he made the film in order to “scare the hell out of people," but Hedren may have been more scared than any audience member. During the filming of the movie’s climactic bird-attack scene, Hitchcock put Hedren in a giant cage and had two men throw live birds at her face. He shot the scene all day long, every day, for an entire week. It was only when she suffered a gash underneath one of her eyes that filming was stopped. “Really the worst week of my life,” said Hedren.

Above: The original still of Tippi Hedren. © Universal Pictures.

North by Northwest, 1959

Above: Seth Rogen. Photograph by Art Streiber.
The idea for the famous cornfield scene came about when Hitchcock determined to reverse, as dramatically as possible, the clichéd movie trope in which a man is forced to run for his life from some sinister force. “How is this usually done?” asked Hitchcock. “A dark night at a narrow intersection of the city. The waiting victim standing in a pool of light under the street lamp. The cobbles are ‘washed with the recent rains.’?” So Hitchcock instructed his production designer to put his hero in a wide-open expanse in which he couldn't hide—a completely flat cornfield in the middle of nowhere.

Above: The original still of Cary Grant. MGM/Photofest.

Psycho, 1960

Above: Marion Cotillard. Photograph by Mark Seliger.
A lot is made of the influence on Hitchcock’s films of his father, “a rather nervous man” who once locked his six-year-old son in a local jail for misbehavior. Less is known about Hitchcock's mother. We do know that they had a close relationship; so close, in fact, that she accompanied him on holidays with his wife. Older women in Hitchcock’s films are rarely treated with kindness, however, and tend to be scolding, obnoxious, doddering. But it was not until Psycho that a mother was treated as a homicidal maniac, even if by proxy.

Above: The original still of Janet Leigh. Paramount Pictures/Photofest.

By the way, if you haven't seen the above Hitchcock movies, I highly recommend that you do. These, along with many others like The Trouble With Harry, Rope, The Wrong Man, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Torn Curtain, Notorious, Frenzy, and more are worth a rental movie fest. You won't be sorry.

Throw them in your Netflix cue or buy a boxed set here.

You can see a video of the shoot, worth seeing because the actors get really into character, here.

Johanna Basford Goes Cuckoo, Punk Peacock, Delirium & Flutterlicious

Cuckoo, Punk Peacock, Delirium, Flutterlicious and Macbeth are just a few of the fun names Johanna Basford has given to her unique and beautiful wallpapers. The multi talented Scottish designer has a way with names as well as with flora and fauna. Her hand printed and hand painted wallpapers (both custom and studio collection) are simply fabulous. In addition to those, she makes ceramics, limited edition prints, lampshades and some unusual items all of which incorporate her simultaneously delicate and bold designs.

Talented and super productive, she was the recipient of Elle's Decoration Design Award for the best in bedrooms in 2007. Below are some of her amazing creations, with the descriptions furnished from Johanna.

Bespoke Collection of Wallpaper

Punk Peacock, Bespoke Collection - digitally printed:

Above: Johanna's first exploration into digital printing. A twist on tradition, this interpretation of the classic ‘bird amongst the blossoms" print, features pairs of ornamental peacocks, perched amidst giant, oversized foliage and flowers, in a dramatic black on white, super-wide wallpaper. Not for the fainthearted, this bold, 1.2 meter wide print packs an eye-watering visual punch.

Delirium, Bespoke Collection - hand printed and embellished with Swarovski Crystals:

Above: Richly inked hand printed wallpaper, studded with Swarovski Crystals. This paper features layers of swirling botanics and decorative flourishes, silk screen printed in gloss black, pearly metallics, flashes of crisp silver lacquer and hand embellished with world-famous Swarovski Crystals.

Midnight Butterfly, Bespoke Collection - hand printed:

Above: A truly exquisite wallpaper, perfect for hanging in panels in place of traditional artwork. Delicate, inky layers of black on black floral and butterfly motifs are over printed with gold lacquered detail and further embellished with hand drawing. Paper-cut and gold leaf butterfly silhouettes flutter from the paper at intervals. Each panel is accompanied with 5 gold leaf butterflies, to be sited on install to catch the light or draw attention to a particular feature. Further gold leaf butterflies available on request.

Cuckoo, Bespoke Collection - hand painted:

Above: Delicate gold lacquered cuckoo clock, surrounded by rambling foliage and layered over a glossy black on black silhouette. A unique piece merging ornate decoration with functional design. Battery operated clock mechanism (single AA battery required)

Studio Collection of Wallpapers:

Crazy Botanic, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: Delicate tangles of imagined botanics, a-flutter with butterflies and lady bugs form densely decorative spheres of foliage, each interlinked with a single entwined vine.
Available in the color options shown above.

Flutterlicious, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: A truly sumptuous wallpaper; hundreds of delicately hand drawn butterflies, silk screen printed in rich gold lacquer or pearly hot pink. Stunning in single panels or stretched out across a feature wall.

Bella, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: Simple, yet delicately ornate; topiary-inspired spheres of foliage and blossoms, interlaced with love birds and butterflies, hand printed in pearly hues of aqua green onto spearmint or crisp white. Also available as a print.

Peking, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: Orient-inspired opulence; circular motifs featuring ornamental peacocks and butterflies encircled with exotic blossoms and foliage, each adjoined with a decorative band of flourishes. Available in the color options shown above.

Macbeth, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: A deliciously dark, gothic-inspired wallpaper. In a twist to Johanna's usual style of feminine florals, tangles of botanics and serpents twist their way through skeletons, spider's webs and ram's skulls.

Damask, Studio Collection - Limited Edition:

Above: Elegant flora intricately laced together forming a classicly shaped motif. Printed in limited edition print runs in two colour palettes, Western Isle Stone, a crisp, slate blue on white and Shortbread, warm biscuity beige onto a creamy rice-pudding ground.

Insectiana, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: A wallpaper with hidden depths. On close inspection, this classically styled print reveals a treasure of entomology gems; an inky, Victorian-inspired motif encases intricate drawings of beasties, butterflies and bumble bees. Available in white on black or black on white. Also available as a print.

Parlour, Studio Collection - Hand Printed:

Above: Inspired by glamorous 50's show girls, with a hint of art nouveau opulence, this cheeky wallpaper is a must for boudoirs and powder rooms.

Her "glow' wallpaper seems to be a project that I hope becomes a reality:

About Johanna (the following is her bio from her site):

Inspired by her upbringing on a small fish farm in rural Scotland, much of Johanna's work has roots in the flora and fauna that she has grown up with. Her boundless imagination and passion for drawing, took her to Art School in Dundee, where she graduated with a first class honours degree in Printed Textiles in 2005.

Having dabbled with the idea of moving to London to work in a commercial studio, Johanna decided the concrete clad city sapped her creativity. Driven by a passion to create beautiful work of the highest possible calibre, Johanna set up her small Scottish studio creating distinctively different hand drawn motifs in her signature black and white palette.

In addition to creating her own collection of hand printed wallpapers which now adorn the walls of commercial and residential spaces across the globe, Johanna has created work for a variety of clients such as DKNY, Heals and The Crafts Council at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Boucheron Celebrates 150 Years With Some Serious Goodies

2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the Parisian jeweler, The House of Boucheron, and to celebrate they have created many unusual, special and limited edition items. Here are just a few.

Above: The Reflet XL Limited Edition Watch:
"Our 150th anniversary has been the opportunity to revisit the Reflet watch, which rose to fame thanks to a system of interchangeable bracelets for which Boucheron filed the first patent in 1947. The limited-edition Reflet XL is intended for men of sophisticated taste who appreciate beauty, and for collectors. It revisits a modern classic with its imposing 45mm case, the largest Boucheron has ever made, and the unique oscillating weight by Girard-Perregaux."--- Boucheron CEO, Jean-Christophe Bédos,

Above: A collaboration with Vertu resulted in the Signature Python and Signature Cobra mobile phones

According to Boucheron CEO, Jean-Christophe Bédos, they "decided to celebrate this anniversary with Boucheron Enchanteur, a collection of Fine Jewellery that is a hymn to 150 years of history, expertise, sensuality and daring. This collection, which took over 12,000 hours to complete, is the quintessence of the talent and skill of Boucheron’s artisan-jewellers. Inspired by our seven founding values, it is a collection of seven parures on the themes of daring, magic, sensuality, mystery, danger, curiosity and gourmandise. After being presented in Paris, this Fine Jewellery collection will travel the world, visiting Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, the Côte d’Azur, London and Dubai."

The pieces are show below, in sketch form on the left and final form on the right:

To commemorate the occasion, there's even a chocolate snake necklace topped off with a 20.08 carat fancy brown tinted yellow diamond.

A collaboration with Parisian Chocolatier La Maison du Chocolat yielded this necklace that plays with Boucheron's commonly used snake motif. The necklace is coated and decorated with real chocolate which covers the chocolate gold skeleton.

Dolls For Big Boys and Girls: The Dude, Hitchcock Barbie, Even An Obama Doll.

The 2008 International Comic-Con is coming to San Diego in mid July (the 23rd- 27th). The biggest comics and pop culture event isn't only for sci-fi and anime nerds anymore and the four day memberships are already sold out. Every year at Comic-Con, several companies release limited editions of their products or introduce what they think will be hot sellers for the upcoming holiday season. This year they have everything you'd expect; hot tv show action figures from such hits as Heroes and Adult Swim, sexy japanese anime dolls and yes, more Star Wars products.

However, in addition to releasing the usual plethora of action movie genre dolls like Iron man, Flash and the Incredible Hulk, there are some unusual (and might I say, hip) action figures debuting that will conjure up nostalgia for the 30+ crowd.

Celebrating Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, this incredible Mattel Barbie Collector's doll features the Hitchcock heroine being attacked by a trio of fine feathered foes, just like Tippi Hedren in the movie:

Stands about 11 1/2-inches tall. Available for pre order here.

Don't miss The Dude-- Unemployed! A Comic-Con Exclusive Action Figure of The Dude from The Big Lebowski. Dressed in his bathrobe and slippers, he stands 8-inches tall and comes with loads of hilarious accessories: sunglasses, robe, White Russian, milk carton, ID card, and genuine cloth rug!

Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski is a real laid-back kind of guy. He enjoys "bowling, driving, (and having) the occasional acid flashback." In the classic film Big Lebowski, this humble pacifist and his bowling buddies become entangled in a web of embezzlement, supposed kidnapping, and alcoholic laced hijinks!

Also making their product debuts at Comic Con, Big Lebowski Urban Achiever 8-Inch Figures Series 2 Set:

Lebowski figures available for pre-order here.

From the cult-classic film Reservoir Dogs, the movie that launched Quentin Tarantino's career, comes this exciting set of Action Figures:

Regan comes with a detailed staircase display base and multiple points of articulation, including a ball-jointed neck, swivel forearms, and swivel legs. Pre-order the creepy freaky Exorcist Regan doll here.

Sporting 8 points of articulation, this figure can help show the world who you believe deserves their vote! Pre-order Obama here. And yes, a John McCain action figure that you can pre-order here arrives in August as well.

And believe it or not, A Dexter action figure is coming soon.

Clearly, I am not too old to play with dolls.

Other upcoming odd but perversely appealing toy releases worth noting:

Steiff is releasing a Mohair Buddha Bear. Now, if that doesn't tell you that Buddhism has permeated mainstream society, I don't know what does (yes, I'm still waiting for Buddha Barbie).

Above: The 9-inch tall Buddha Bear is made of brass-colored mohair and his facial expression, posture, and aura were inspired by classic Buddha figures. He is 5-way jointed and his legs are slightly bent. This enables him to sit in the lotus position in which energy can flow freely. His belly is somewhat large and his nose, mouth, and claws are embroidered with gold-colored thread. The corners of the black eyes are hand painted in order to give his expression depth and dignity.

Laura Goldstein's Silk Down Cushions:
Twice As Nice As Most Pillows

Above: the front and back of Laura Goldstein's Swimming pillow

Laura Goldstein (aka Grotta & Co.) designs silk cushions that are about as divine as throw pillows get. Made with fine materials and down-filled, her stunning cushions are twice as nice given that the designs on either side are different and equally attractive.

Richly hued silk charmeuse, repeatedly hand-dyed, printed patterns drawn from nature, old family letters and flea market finds contribute to the beauty of each pillow. Feather inserts, hidden zippers on seams and piping in contrasting colors are just some of the details that make these both unique and impressive.

"My pieces are made with the intention that they will be around forever and passed down from mothers to daughters." says Laura.

In this age of mass-produced products, Goldstein's pieces are printed and dyed one at a time. All are slightly different. Many of her fabrics include a layer printed with hand-written family letters. The handwriting is from the late 1800s when penmanship played an important role in defining a person. In her larger works, she often hides a tiny image or two within the design--most of them symbols for good luck.

Some of her pillows shown below:

Goldstein comes from a specialty toy background and recognizes the need for all ages to play and dream. All of her collections boast two completed sides--giving the wearer a "two for one" experience. A pillow or scarf can be displayed one way or the other, displaying two completely different colors and images. Her scarves and wraps, when worn, play off this collage-like effect.

In addition to the beautiful pillows, she makes scarves with the same beautiful fabrics and patterns, also double sided, making them twice as pretty.

EICHLERS: A Modern Vision. New paintings by Danny Heller Opens Today

As a huge fan of both artist Danny Heller and architect Joseph Eichler, the exhibit opening today at Terrence Rogers Fine Art, Eichlers: A Modern Vision, it's no wonder I feel that this exhibit is a must see. The show consists of paintings of Eichler's mid century modern architecture as they appear today.

EICHLERS: A Modern Vision
NEW PAINTINGS by DANNY HELLER
Sunday, June 22 – July 31

Above : artist Danny Heller

In his first show, Los Angeles painter Danny Heller captured views of suburbia. This new exhibition features the homes popularized by the California developer Joseph Eichler.

To learn about Joseph Eichler and his home designs, click here.

Danny Heller focuses on Eichler houses in his native San Fernando Valley. Avoiding any sense of nostalgia or artificial atmosphere, Heller paints “now” – as the houses exist today – bringing a sense of wonderment and delight that is both original to the houses and displays a modernity that is very much alive.

Rather than a portrait of the overall house, Danny Heller’s eye finds a path to a door, a façade’s strict geometry of right angles, or the wonderful triangles of a carport. The atriums become vehicles for catching light as well as an invitation to living.

In Heller’s vision, a light in a garage or the glimpse of forms seen through translucent glass become as magical as dusk behind Italian cypresses.

Looking at elements to frame and sculpt, Danny Heller’s paintings hint at the complexity of the designs and offer ideas of symmetry, poise and beauty, all in the context of Southern California, that make Eichlers special.

Wedding Dishes They Didn't Register For But Won't Return

Okay, so your friends have already chosen their china pattern. And it's gorgeous. But you really wanted to get them something unique and original in addition. I say 'in addition' because buying a couple a version of a product for which they registered, but not the actual one they chose, is just plain rude.

Unfortunately, so many personalizable or customizable wedding gifts are either too cutesy (like those god-awful cartoon like drawings of faces and swirly script on pottery) or too corporate (gold embossed monogrammed leather stuff). So, what can you get them that is special and won't end up on ebay or in the back of a closet?

Below are three romantic, original wedding dishes/platters that newlyweds will be sure to covet.

1. Jessica Rust designs makes several different sets of platters and dishes for weddings and anniversaries. She has many worth looking at but my favorite is the Birch collections. The Birch collection features the couple's initials carved into a birch tree drawn in a sweet tasteful style. Harkening back to childhood crushes but retaining a sophisticated style:

Also available in special gold glazed edition:

Jemal Wright Bath Designs: For Those Who Like A Bold or Blingy Bathroom

Jemal Wright Bath Designs is unlikely to be mentioned in the same sentence as the words neutral, monochrome or tradition. Far from it. Jemal Wright Bath Designs are bright, bold and blingy. The kind of toilets you'd refer to as a commode rather than a crapper.

The designs consist of two lines of bathroom furnishings; The Chromeozone™ and the Isis™.
The pieces in the Chromeozone™ collection start with a chrome plated porcelain base to which dyes are added retaining the metallic sheen of chrome while adding flexibility of color:

The ISIS™ collection has the same chromed and dyed porcelain but come partially or completely handset with Swarovski crystals. You can add crystal studded flushing handles, screw caps and lid. Or you can have the entire commode handset with crystals:

Each piece is finished with the studio's signature logo and is numbered and recorded for authenticity:

With one of these in your home, I guess you'd have to excuse yourself to go to the jemal rather than the john.

Catherine's Animals: Ledner combines cool wallpaper with cute animals.

Above: photographer Catherine Ledner and friend

I love animals and I love wallpaper, so it stands to reason that I'd be a fan of Catherine Ledner's photos and prints of animals in front of wallpaper. I first discovered her work on NOTCOT when they featured her book, Animal House and the NY Times slideshow that accompanied it. Now her fab photos are for sale as chromogenic prints.

With a keen eye for color and composition, she sells a limited series of the prints in various sizes (100 of 11"x14" at $250, 20 of 16"x20" at $500, 20 of 20"x24" at $750, and 10 of 32"x40" at $1700) that feature domestic and farm animals, birds and wildlife posed in front of fabulous contemporary wall coverings.

Here are a few of my favorites (she has many more!):

The photographer's bio (from her site):
Catherine Ledner was born in New Orleans. After graduating from NYU with a degree in film, she worked in television for a year and a half. She then worked as a studio manager for a photographer in New York, which led to her eventual move to Pasadena to study photography at Art Center College of Design.

She graduated from Art Center in 1994 and since then has built a great base of clients who hire her for her innovative style and ability to work well with subjects. She loves photographing all types of people and revels in the experience of working in different environments.

Cindy Sherman's Madame Pompadour Limoges Porcelain

In 1990, photographer/model/ artist Cindy Sherman created this Limoges porcelain 21 piece tea service in a limited edition after the original design commissioned by the MADAME DE POMPADOUR (nee Poisson) in 1756 at the Manufacture Royale de Sevres.

Sherman's image of herself as Madame de Pompadour was transferred onto porcelain through a complex process which requires up to 16 photo-silkscreens. Each tureen and platter is silkscreened and painted at Ancienne Manufacture Royale, fired on four different occasions, and then individually signed and numbered.

The edition, which was published by ARTES MAGNUS, is still available for purchase at various sites (see the end of this post) in the traditional 18th century colors of apple green, rose, royal blue or yellow and is limited to 75 in each color version.

Part of the present Rococo exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum the tureens and platters are also part of permanent collections at museums such as the MAD museum, the Saint Louis Art Museum, The Tate museum in Liverpool, the Schein Joseph Museum of Ceramic Art. The Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art and others.

A bit about Cindy Sherman:

above: Photograph of Cindy Sherman, by Mark Seliger, courtesy of the artist and Metro Pictures Gallery, New York, NY, USA

Artist's Biography:
Cindy Sherman was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey in 1954 and graduated from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976. In the late 1970s, Sherman began a series of black and white photographs, which she named Untitled Film Stills, (1977 to 1980), and were first exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, Texas in 1980. The series cemented her position in post-modern photography and since then Sherman has continually worked to challenge the boundaries of the medium. In almost all of her works, Sherman acts as model, photographer, and director, and alters her appearance beyond recognition through makeup, prosthetics and costumes.

Although she began her career using black and white photography, Sherman transitioned to color film in the early 1980s. Her use of costume and makeup challenged the way in which portraiture was considered. She further challenged conventional means of viewing the human form in 1992 with her Sex Pictures series, which involved life-sized prosthetics as models in contorted and gender-crossing positions. In her recent work, Sherman has reintroduced herself as the model. From fairytales and history portraits to horror films and the nostalgia of the 1950s and 1960s films, Sherman consistently examines a woman's role in society and questions the ways in which the viewer looks at and identifies with the woman portrayed.

Her work has been shown throughout the United States and Europe, and Metro Pictures in New York has shown her work since 1980. In 1997, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California held a retrospective of her work, Cindy Sherman: Retrospective, and in 1999, Sherman was the recipient of the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography, which recognized her influence on photography from the late 1970s onward. She lives and works in New York.

Amanda Dunbar's Precious Rebels™ Art Guitars

I was hesitant to write a post about the multi-talented Amanda Dunbar® because she is so ridiculously copyright protected. Seriously, there are warnings all over sites about terms, conditions and the like. Even her name and personal 'tag line' are registered and trademarked. She was dubbed a child prodigy at age 13, so most likely her parents and or guardians and managers went to great lengths to protect her since she was so young. She is also respected and known by many celebrities so I'm sure this comes into play as well.

I guess I'm taking a risk writing this post, but, because I am using images found on her own sites which are unaltered and since I'm not saying anything except how fabulous her hand painted crystal clad guitars are, I'm hoping they'll take mercy on me for the free positive press. Please note that all the images you see in this post are property of Amanda Dunbar, LLC.

She has several websites, many loaded with press and video, but I really wanted to share one small facet of this very pretty young woman's creations with you. In addition to being an artist who paints in oils, etches on copper plates (intaglio) and works with stone lithography, it is her Precious Rebels™ collection of hand painted, Swarovski crystal clad guitars that I wanted to blog about.

They are just too damn beautiful not to share:

In both an effort to be both thorough and law-abiding, I'm reproducing an article about her guitars that was written by Chris Coats for the Dallas Morning News in 2006:
Sarah Losinger had run out of wall space to place any more artwork. But that didn't stop her from visiting the gallery of her favorite artist, Amanda Dunbar. What she came across surprised her: painted guitars clad in Swarovski crystals.

"I'd never seen anything like it," Ms. Losinger said. "Who'd think of using a guitar for a canvas? But then again, Amanda does everything out of the box."Ms. Dunbar is used to standing out. At 13, the Allen resident was dubbed an art prodigy, appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and selling more than $500,000 in paintings in her first show. In 2006, at 23, she became the youngest inductee to the Texas Women's Hall of Fame.

In addition, Ms. Dunbar's Angel Alliance charity has raised more than $1 million for various causes, including the Grammy MusiCares Foundation for Artists."MusicCares raises money for health care for artists, not just visual but also musical artists," Ms. Dunbar said. "We're all self-employed, and I wanted to do whatever I could to help artists, and my projects sort of organically evolved."Now her guitars are capturing the attention of bigwigs in the music world and entertainment industry. Called "Precious Rebels," the blinged-out works of playable art run from $15,000 to $75,000.

She began painting on guitars after working with projects with Gibson Guitars, most recently for the company's Austin GuitarTown project. Nearly three dozen artists were given 10-foot guitar sculptures to design, with the finished products displayed around the city and then auctioned last fall to benefit local art charities. Having worked with the Grammy Awards and other musical organizations in the past, Ms. Dunbar came up with the idea of offering playable art.

"I'm passionate about painting and want it accessible to as many people as possible," she said. "I wanted my guitar pieces to be the art and the music world. It's kind of a way to combine sculpture, music, painting and collage."

So far, the artist has created more than 30 guitars, such as the "Capri Tiger," which features a metallic blue-and-black tiger crystal design. Another, "The Parisian," is an intricate black-and-white swirled number.

What Ms. Dunbar loves the most about her creations is that they have become a collaborative effort with her family. Ms. Dunbar, a student at Southern Methodist University completing her master's in art history, creates and paints the original acrylic on the guitar. Her mother, Judi, also an artist, does a lot of the finishing work of gluing thousands of crystals to each instrument. "It's working a week straight, 12-hour days of gluing," Judi Dunbar said. "It's a lot of meticulous work for each one."

Amanda's father, Ken, an engineer and guitar buff, travels the country looking for classic guitars. Each is refurbished and is also equipped with radio frequency identification technology."Each one can be played, and it doesn't affect the sound or performance of the instrument," said Mr. Dunbar. "That is just as much of a priority as the art."

The Grammy Awards requested a special guitar created by the artist that will be used to commemorate their 50-year anniversary, the Dunbars said. The guitar – a Gibson Black Beauty Les Paul with predominantly jet-black and black-diamond Swarovski crystals – will be played by different celebrities at various events around the country.
A major retailer is also looking into carrying the line, and musicians and others in the music industry have shown interest. Until then, the guitars are not for sale to the general public, the Dunbars said. Ms. Losinger, the only customer to snag two so far, had to persuade the artist to part with them."They actually are playable instruments, and they make a great conversation piece," she said. "Now my daughter wants one. I'll probably have to get her one, too."

Vincent Leman's Warped Sense Of Style: Dust Furniture

I have written not one, but two, posts on furniture that has a 'cartoon' style to it. Judson Beaumont's Straightline furniture and the Porter's Cartoon Furniture®

Vincent Thomas Leman's line of furniture, Dust*, steps that up a bit with more adult styling, yet is still delightfully whimsical. So, here's your third cartoon-like furniture line:

Dust Furniture is a collection of studio furniture from craft artist Vincent Thomas Leman. Vincent has built one-of-a-kind pieces for years, but released this line to accommodate the demand for reproducible versions of his work.

A key part of Vincent Leman's creation process is the integration of function into the form. The artist strives to create furniture that is functional to the degree that it may be successfully integrated into daily life, yet--equally important--provides a spark to brighten the routine of daily life. He finds joy in discovering new ways to mix art and life and to make art more accessible.

Leman's work has been described as 'abstract traditional furniture.' Each piece is essentially a traditional furniture form that is stretched, curved, stacked, and stepped to fit his design intentions. While he works in wood, Leman considers his actual medium to be 'traditional furniture.' The classical root of each piece helps maintain its identity as furniture and keeps the work familiar and approachable despite the unusual shapes.

It's a Plane! It's A Boat! It's The Freakin Rad New Icon Amphibious Aircraft: The A5

LATEST NEW UPDATE, 2009:

THE ICON A5, The trailer and pilots lessons for two are an offering in the Neiman Marcus 2009 Christmas Book. price? $250,000.00 USD

Original post:

ICON Aircraft, a privately held startup based in Los Angeles, has just unveiled the latest addition to the powersport category.

On June 12, it unveiled the A5, an amphibious sport plane. At the cost of $139,000, the plane is intended for recreational flying and will be available in 2010. The A5 is one of the first aircraft designed specifically for this market, which ICON expects could be worth as much as $2 billion annually.

The A5 is part sports car, part Jet Ski, and part airplane. The aircraft's folding wings tuck neatly under a slim rear tail so it can be towed behind a car. It's relatively small - about as long as two compact cars parked bumper to bumper, with a wingspan of 34 feet.

From the Icon website:
Introducing a new dimension to sport flying.

A new, light sport aircraft manufacturer, ICON Aircraft, started with the vision that planes should be designed with the consumer in mind first. Founded out of Stanford Graduate School of Business by Kirk Hawkins, an accomplished engineer and former U.S. Air Force F-16 pilot, ICON Aircraft conducted years of thorough research to develop an industrial design that has evolved to become ICON’s first model, the ICON A5.

Above: CEO and Founder, Kirk Hawkins

A long-time powersports enthusiast, Hawkins’ dream for the potential of sport flying became possible when he first heard of the FAA’s rule changes for light sport aircraft in 2004. As he witnessed what the Yamaha Waverunner did for personal watercraft in 1980’s, Hawkins believed a consumer-oriented sport plane could do the same for recreational flying.

Early on, Hawkins began assembling investors and world-class design and engineering talent to bring the vision to reality. ICON Aircraft eventually set up its headquarters and development facility in Southern California, a region known for having the world’s largest concentration of aerospace resources as well as the world’s leading automobile design and development resources.

Advising along the way have been top academic professionals, business leaders in aviation and powersports, and directors of award-winning product design firms like IDEO and BMW DesignWorks USA.

Leading the charge to bring the design into production is an engineering and fabrication team that previously worked on such notable projects as the Virgin Global Flyer and X-Prize winning SpaceShipOne, among many other significant aircraft and aerospace projects at Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites in nearby Mojave, Calif.

Habidecor Bath Rugs: Bath Mats Never Looked This Good

Bathmats are usually so ugly, I avoid them altogether. But the luxurious, plush and uniquely designed rugs by the Portugal based Habidecor changed all that for me. But they don't come cheap, with the prices running from $75.00 to upwards of $400.00

My personal favorites are their bath rugs whose themes are borrowed from nature:

In addition to the nature inspired rugs, they have several other colorful plush designs, some of which are shown below:

If you don't like your bathmas or bath rugs to stand out, they also have many luxurious bath rugs in traditional rectangles and various colors.

The Latest Things To Be Blinged: Ricoh Diamond Camera & New LG USB Diamond Drive

Dalumi Goes Tech with Diamond Camera, USB Drive
(source: idex)

DTC Sightholder Dalumi Group has launched a luxury lifestyle accessory collection, featuring a diamond-encrusted flash drive and a digital camera accented with diamonds. The launch is a result of a partnership with Korean technology giant LG Electronics and Japan’s Ricoh, a digital photo and office solution leader.

Dalumi Marketing and Business Development Head Yuval Kemp explained that the partnership was directly related to the company’s fashion world debut of the diamond-studded top designed with Gianfranco Ferré last year (shown below).

“The success of the exclusive diamond-studded clothing item that we designed together with Gianfranco Ferré prompted us to partner and manufacture other unique items such as these elegant electronic goods”, said Kemp.

The LG Disk on Key is made up of diamonds from Dalumi mounted in white gold and is valued at $10,000, while the Ricoh Capilo R5 digital camera includes over 200 diamonds, also embedded in white gold, and is priced at $25,000.

The camera and flash drive will be displayed at high-profile, luxury goods exhibitions around the world and will be auctioned at the end of the year, with the entirety of the proceeds going to the SOS Children’s Village in Botswana, a charity for orphans Dalumi has supported in the past.

Can't Afford An Actual Porsche for Dad? How About One Of These New Items By Porsche Design?

New Watches by Porsche Design:

P´6750 Worldtimer
The mechanical worldtimer displays the time in two different time zones simultaneously. The three hands in the center of the watch show the time zone in which the wearer is currently situated. Two dial openings indicate a reference location of the 24 world time zones and its local time. This second time is displayed synchronously to the watch’s primary time. The reference locations are displayed in the dial opening with a three-letter code. It is particularly simple and convenient to change between the two time zones: By pressing a button, the time at the destination is transmitted immediately to the hour hand - without losing a second.

Rose gold case with two crowns and integrated button. Natural caoutchouc strap with folding clasp in rose gold:

Titanium:

Matte black:

Case:
The Worldtimer is available in three models: with a matt-finished or black PVD-coated titanium case or with a matt-finished 18-carat rose gold case [4N]. Titanium is extremely durable and surprisingly light. Because titanium is skin-friendly and non-allergenic, it is very comfortable to wear. Convex, anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal; six-screw titanium or rose gold case back affixed with 6 screws with engraving.
Strap: Black, natural caoutchouc strap with folding clasp in titanium or rose gold
Diameter: 45 mm, Height: 16.8 mm, Waterproof up to 100 m

The P´6910 INDICATOR.

The first chronograph to mechanically enable a digital display of the stopping time in hours and minutes. The INDICATOR is heralding a revolution in timing – it is the only automatic chronograph in the world which is equipped with a mechanical-digital stopwatch display. Total stopwatch time: 9 hours, 59 minutes. The dial and hands are perfectly readable: They are also visible in the dark due to the clear layout and the different luminous coatings on the hands and markings. The case is made of rose gold and PVD-coated titanium. The sapphire glass is scratch-resistant, anti-reflective and embossed. Power reserve display.

Also, coming this fall, the very first Men's Fragrance by Porsche: Essence

from the press release:
Porsche Design launches its first men's fragrance range consisting of eight products. The range will go on sale from fall 2008 in Porsche Design Stores and via Clarins Group distribution channels. The new men's fragrance range allows Porsche Design to expand its range of classic gentlemen’s accessories which already includes items such as watches, sunglasses, luggage, sports and fashion collections, as well as electronic goods. The core product is an eau de toilette which will be available in three different versions. An aftershave lotion, aftershave balm, a hair and body shampoo and two deodorants in stick and spray form complete the range.

The new fragrance, with its striking cold metallic accords and warm woody tones, is characterized by three strong contrasting elements. The first contact is identified by an intensive top note of penetrating freshness and coolness, borne by a molecule called “arctical” which was developed specially for the new men’s fragrance. The sharpness which they engender is then subdued by the sensation of aromatic myrtle and juniper notes which follow on behind it. Spicy black pepper with a hint of Russian coriander leaves and Siberian pine provide a further contrast to the cold metallic accords. Warm, woody patchouli and balsam fir notes provide the third companion to the icy prelude. These are underlined by a delicate nuance of frankincense.

The fragrance bottle designed by Porsche Design Studio is a glacier-blue, frosted glass prism with captivating purist architecture. The glass prism is contained within a protecting brushed, black, anodized aluminum frame. The light character of the fragrance is emphasized by the color blue, a symbol of freshness and naturalness. The black aluminum used for the frame provides an exciting contrast. Porsche Design thus remains true to its distinctive design vocabulary and once again puts its faith in the use of challenging materials.

Deeply Madly Living: Eclectic Uber Chic

One of my favorite things about surfing the web is that one finds things they almost never otherwise would. One of those is Garry Jensen and Elena Bertinetto's unique online store and company, named Deeply Madly Living.

Above: owners Garry Jensen and Elena Bertinetto

Their "philosophy" on their site reads as follows:
Deeply Madly Living is Danish born Garry Jensen, a former international investment banker and design enthusiast and Elena Bertinetto, an italian interior decorator and trompe-l'oeil artist.

The company was founded after we moved back to the United States and attempted to furnish our Manhattan loft, a former button factory in the heart of New York City, with the décor from our previous homes in Europe. The aim was to give our interior an exclusive, eclectic, metropolitan twist and to create a new sense of style that would harmonize with our new "urban industrial" setting and still be a reflection of our own individual personalities.

It was a question of reinventing and rebalancing the furniture we already had (a combination of fine antiques, understated contemporary furniture and quirky modern artwork) by adding striking accent pieces, bold colors and uncommon objects that would be fresh and exciting to the eye and mind. The standard lifeless, modern and monochromatic picture perfect loft décor was never an option.

We soon discovered that looking for these accent pieces was an incredibly frustrating and time consuming experience. Even in a city like New York, filled with designer shops and galleries, there a was a need for a store offering a comprehensive line of unique, "cool" pieces for the home.
So, what's so 'cool'? I think these are.

BREAKING NEWS: iphone 2.0 release date delayed until July.

Hot off the presses:

WWDC: iPhone 2.0 release slated for early July

by Brian Chen, Macworld.com
Jun 9, 2008 11:14 am

From Macworld
Apple will delay the release of the iPhone 2.0 software until early July. But when the firmware does ship, it will offer plenty of new features for iPhone and iPod touch users.

Apple announced the new release date for the iPhone 2.0 update as part of a demonstration of the software during Steve Jobs’ Worldwide Developers Conference keynote presentation on Monday. Originally, Apple had expected to release iPhone 2.0 in late June.

When it does ship, the software will introduce a host of new features. The iPhone will add a contact search that allows users to enter a name and instantly find who they’re looking for. Full iWork document support lets users view Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents. Apple also will offer full support for Microsoft Office documents, including PowerPoint presentations.

iPhone 2.0 adds much sought-after bulk delete and move capabilities to its Mail application. Mail users will be able to save images from e-mails into their Photo Library.

Apple will also add parental control features, allowing parents to turn off explicit content, YouTube, iTunes Store, and the forthcoming App Store.

As announced when Apple first unveiled its iPhone 2.0 plans in March, the software update is free for iPhone users. iPod touch users can update to the firmware for $9.99.

In addition to outlining iPhone 2.0 features, Apple executives also profiled the iPhone software development kit that allows developers to build native apps for the phone. In a 33-minute demonstration during Monday’s keynote, a steady stream of developers showed off the games and apps that will be available via the App Store later this summer. Companies demonstrating their wares included Sega, Loopt, Pangea Software, TypePad, Cow Music, and Modality.

“We think we have a fantastic platform here for people to build incredible applications,” said Scott Forstall, Apple senior vice president of iPhone software.

Jobs also spoke about the enterprise features in the iPhone 2.0 update, highlighting many of the capabilities first showcased at his March demo. New enterprise features will include push e-mail, push contacts, push calendars auto-discovery of Microsoft Exchange servers.

As this article went to press, the keynote was continuing. We’ll have more information on iPhone 2.0 as it becomes available.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
and from Engadget:
It's been a long, leak-filled wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware -- Apple's taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around. Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they're also making sure it's available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps... and does it all for cheaper. Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 -- and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data. Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers. WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet. Unfortunately, there's no front-facing cam, which syncs with what we were hearing, but is still a little disappointing. Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year. 8GB is available for $199, 16GB for $299 -- and the 16GB comes in white. Both pricepoints require a contract. Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th.

Other tidbits:

* It's a teensy bit thicker.
* A SIM ejector comes in the box, at last.
* There's no dock included, just a USB power adapter.
* On AT&T unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, on top of voice plans starting at $39.99 a month. Unlimited 3G data for business users will be $45 a month, on top of voice.

Miracle-Gro Millinery: Tulips and Pansies, The Headdress Affair

Now in its seventh year, Village Care of New York's annual "Tulips and Pansies: The Headdress Affair" is not your average benefit fashion show - pair New York's top florists with the city's most creative fashion designers, and the end result? Floral headdresses akin to wearable rooftop gardens, that are so outrageous and over-the-top they could be their own float in the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Take a look:

The show, held on Thursday, May 15, raised funds to support Village Care’s medical and other support programs for the 1500 AIDS and HIV patients they serve on a daily basis. With Heatherette's Richie Rich and Traver Rains and model and actress Lydia Hearst as the event's co-chairs and James Aguiar of "Full Frontal Fashion" as the exuberant emcee, fashion met floral in 18 elaborately constructed headdresses by designers such as Betsey Johnson, Alvin Valley, Catherine Malandrino, Yigal Azrouel, Shoshanna, Lela Rose, Magda Berliner, Cynthia Steffe, Jordi Scott, b. michael, Alexis Bittar and others.

above: host James Aguiar

"It smells amazing, the girls look amazing and the drag queens look amazing!" said Richie Rich, who participated in the show last year with a “big flying saucer floral concoction.”

Though working with fresh flowers is no easy feat ("They don’t last! You’re trying to get them on, either sew them or with the glue gun, but the glue gun melts the flowers, and they wilt. It’s like an 'America's Next Top Model' challenge!" explained Richie Rich), it didn’t stop the designers from dreaming up headdress that challenged gravity and gave a whole new meaning to the famous sixties song lyric, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair."

From a corset constructed entirely of pussy willow buds resembling tiny pearls by Empress 22 Charlene Chivoe of Imperial Court of New York (in collaboration with Tara McInerney of Morningside Greenhouse) to long garlands of flowers delicately woven into the model's hair in Cynthia Steffe and Renny and Reed's bohemian headdress, the results were varied, but for the five judges – Patrick McDonald, Alison Berlin, Maggie Norris, Frank Di Caro and Richie Rich – there were some clear stand-outs.

The judges named four winners – "Most Outrageous" went to Empress 13 Anne Tique of Imperial Court of New York in collaboration with Brian Fischer of Morningside Greenhouse for their enormous headdress featuring pencil cactus, orchids, peony petals and tillandesis; "Most Beautiful" was Alexis Bittar and Flowers Rock’s Victorian Cyber Goth creation; "Most Original" went to FORM New York and Aristocratic by Tammy's white orchid and blue ostrich feather design and "Most Engaging" was awarded to the biggest headdress of the evening, Betsey Johnson and David Tutera’s "pussy willow chapeau" with irises, petal brim and grass construction.

A bit of background on Dr. Martens:

Klaus Maertens

Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor’s immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany.

On April 1st, 1960, the famous eight-hole Dr. Martens boot – the so-called 1460 was born. This was followed by the 1914 with its 14-holes. Both of these boots were immediately embraced as a working-class essential across the UK.

But then something incredible started to happen. Like some viral infection, the postmen, factory workers and transport unions who had initially bought the boot by the thousand, were joined by the rejects, outcasts and rebels from the fringes of society. At first, it was the working-classes; before long it was the masses.

Skinheads were the first subculture to adopt the boot in the early 1960s. They were followed by nearly all the tribes that emerged over the next four decades: Mods, glam rockers, punks, ska, psychobillies, grebos, goths, industrialists, nu-metal, hardcore, straight-edge, grunge, Britpop, emo… etc.

Subcultures are exactly that – outside of mainstream culture – true to form these disparate ‘tribes’ rapidly began customising the boots: hot knifing, spraying, cutting, painting, deliberately roughing them up or obsessively polishing them to a luminous shine.

High fashion has similarly messed around with the core design in order to include the famous boot in their collections over the last 50 years. Designers who have produced their own unique customisations include Manolo Blahnik, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivian Westwood, Gareth Pugh and most recently Yohji Yamamoto.

Regardless of whether it was a street tribe, musician or fashion legend who was personalising this iconic footwear, the common denominator was the ‘person’, the individual, the creative streak that lies deep within every Dr. Martens wearer. No marketing was ever needed, or used, to create this cycle of invention, and as such this forged a purity that has made the boot one of the most recognisable symbols of creativity and rebellion purely through the people who’ve worn them.

We will be forever indebted to the people who have made us what we are today and continue to do so by using Dr. Martens boots as a blank canvas for their own relentless creativity.

Jan Vormann Combines The Very Old With The Very New in 2 Unusual Projects

Artist Jan Vormann's Dispatchwork, 2007, Venti Eventi - Bocchignano, Rome, Italy. Plastic construction pieces (e.g. Legos®) added to centuries old buildings in Italy:

The above project was done in Bocchignano, Italy, a village close to Rome, as part of the group project "20 Eventi". Moje, Twoje Miasto (My, Your city) - Art Museum, Lodz, Poland

For the exhibition "Moje Twoje Miasto" (My, your city) in Lodz, Poland, he created "destructif modernization":

A custom-shaped mirror was installed outside, on the right-hand corner-wall, of the Museum. Entering to visit the exhibition there seemed to appear a big whole in the building. By using the mirror as a material, he referred to one type of modern architecture, using reflecting surfaces as front.

Jan Vormann started his studies in Berlin and currently studies, lives and works in St. Petersburg.

Tanya Aguiñiga Sees Furniture A Little Differently Than Most

Tanya Aguiñiga (b.1978) is a Los Angeles based furniture designer/maker raised in Tijuana, Mexico. Tanya’s work is informed by border experiences: the interconnectedness of societies, the beauty in struggle and the celebration of culture. She uses furniture as a way to translate emotions into a three dimensional objects and tell stories trough color and touch. Her work encourages users to reconsider the objects they use on a daily basis by creating work that explores an objects’ unseen aspect, such as half chairs that rely on the wall to function and whose image is only complete as its shadow is cast upon the wall.

The Modular Lounge:

She has also dedicated much of her time to using art as a vehicle for community empowerment. She has been a member of Border Art Workshop BAW/TAF, a bi-national artist collaborative for ten years. Through BAW/TAF she helped to build and run a community center in an impoverished area of Tijuana built on trash from the US. For the 6 years she worked there, she focused on bringing national and international attention to the community’s plight through arts only based programs.

Run by Alchemy architects in St. Paul, Minn., weeHouse streamlines the entire process. Each standard weeHouse comes ready-made. And yes, they have electricity. weeHouse standard floors are 1x4 tongue and groove bamboo (light or dark finish available); all interior walls are white gypsum board. Each weeHouse also includes floor-to-ceiling glass doors, container siding (cement fiberboard with vertical battens), EPDM cold roof, tongue and groove bamboo flooring, primed gypsum board ceilings and walls, electrical and plumbing systems, fixtures, bathroom tile, cabinets, and the kitchen sink.

The standard homes are just the beginning, they have many custom homes and what they call not-so-wee homes as well. With tons of options, sizes, configurations, prices, appliance choices, tile and cabinet options, radiant heat flooring and more!

Some things come standard, some don't, you can see it all for yourself at their well designed site which includes many 3D renderings, interactive tools and all the info you could ever want.

iPhone Rumors Gone Wild:
Plastic Case Photos, UMTS 'Test' In Austria And Chinese Handwriting Recognition

The difference between iPhones one and two? Speculation. Steve Jobs showed off the original iPhone six months before it shipped. This isn't Apple's usual modus operandi. Usually the company's products are top secret until launch day.

The break with protocol was ostensibly to stop the design being leaked by the FCC approval process (although why this hasn't happened for iPhone 2.0 is still a mystery), but had the side effect of quelling the inevitable rumor-hysteria that would otherwise have overshadowed the launch. Sure, the free publicity would have been great, but as groundbreaking as the iPhone was, it couldn't have lived up to a device dreamed up by bloggers and fanboys.

The Second Coming is different, and shows us exactly what would have happened the first time around if Apple had gone all Secret Squirrel on us. The speculation is going wild. Here is a roundup of what the web says just this week (and we've only reached Tuesday). A lot of it looks like junk, but who knows?

Plastic Case

The picture above comes from Chinese website, WeiPhone. In it we see the much rumored plastic case. At first look, I called "fake", and it might well be. But remember the leaked pictures of the Fat Nano? We commented that it looked ugly, but once we'd seen it, we'd love it. So, while this plastic case might be a mockup, it could equally be a new, uglier incarnation of the iPhone.

And it makes sense for a few reasons. Plastic is lighter and shows less scratches. It also means that the iPhone could be offered in multiple colors (aluminum would do that, too, but the current rear plate would look a little odd). The projection of the bottom looks fine, although those four surrounding holes look like the iPod remote sockets of old. Extra accessory ports? We'll see, but the plastic case seems to be the most consistently reported rumor, with our Bryan Gardiner kicking things off for Gadget Lab back on April 5th. Just one thing calls this into doubt: Apple has been moving away from plastic in a drive to make its products more recyclable (a new MacBook could be fashioned from aluminum, for example).

Specs

You can't ramp up production for a huge product launch without some leaks, even if you're Apple. One such leak is that there is some kind of sensor next to the earpiece. ILounge speculates that this might be a second camera to allow video calls, something we've thought about here on the lab.

To be honest, though, apart from a new camera and a slightly different case, there's not much more to be done to the iPhone on the outside. All the action is on the screen, and changing that needs only a software update, not the retooling of an entire assembly line. Today's iPhone 2.0 software rumor is all about handwriting recognition, something that has been clunkily implemented already by a third party developer. Version 2.0 is said to include Chinese character recognition as well as input for western characters.

These screenshots, from Chinese site Wretch.cc, show the input screen and preferences. The shots look terrible, but if this is indeed beta software we shouldn't take too much from the looks. The worrying part, though, is the name "Kenneth" where the carrier name should be. There are hacks to do this to the phone, but unless Apple is being paranoid and wants to discredit leaked photos (a possibility, certainly) then these pics have the smell of fakery about them. Even so, China is a potential market of two billion, so we won't discount some kind of special support.

UMTS iPhone in Austria

Lastly come the carrier leaks. According to Der Standard, T-Mobile made an official announcement at a press conference in Vienna, saying that a UMTS iPhone will be coming to Austria "soon". Apparently, Austria will be the "testing ground" for the 3G models. Yes, models, plural:

[I]t is also assumed that up to three new models for different target groups on the market.

This last comes from a source inside chip maker Infineon. Der Standard also reports that the 3G iPhone will sell unlocked, and contrary to widespread speculation, will actually be more expensive. Taken with the reports that AT&T will be subsidizing the new handset to the tune of $200, this makes a certain kind of sense. Instead of the subsidy making the iPhone cheaper, it could just be there to keep it at the same price if you sign up for a contract.

The only reality here is that of confusion. Trying to keep up with the rumors and make some kind of sense of them is a full time job (actually, my full time job). I really can't wait for the WWDC conference, the expected launch-pad of iPhone 2.0, after which we can take a brief vacation before the iPhone 3.0 rumors begin.

And, another rumor about actual release date:
Last year around this time speculation was rampant about the launch of the iphone. And it was the fact that AT&T was canceling vacations between June 15th to July 15th that clued the industry in to an approximate time for the launch. It looks like we might be getting the same clue this year.

According to reports, just as last year, AT&T is asking for vacations to be rescheduled, and has said that no other vacations will be approved for the period deemed to be a "heavy selling period," June 15 to July 12.

Now, some are pointing at June 29th, which would be the one year anniversary of the iPhone launch, as the obvious day - but that happens to be a Sunday, so that's probably not likely.

Still, the timing is actually perfect, with WWDC this year running from June 9 - 13.
