Gucci's 8-8-08 Limited Edition: I-Gucci watch, Bike, Kicks, Panda, Luggage and Mah Jong

8-8-2008 LIMITED EDITION

Gucci is pleased to announce the creation of a special collection, "8-8-2008 Limited Edition”.

Taking her cue from competitive sports, Creative Director Frida Giannini has conceived 8 exclusive accessories that epitomize sporty luxury.

A noteworthy product in this collection is the hot new I-Gucci watch, unique to the "8-8-2008 Limited Collection". It is Gucci's first ever digital timepiece, it will be offered worldwide and is a tantalizing option for cosmopolitan watch fans.

Its clean digital face (which features both numerical or clock hand formats), black dial and steel frame epitomize sporty elegance. The surface of its red monochrome rubber strap is engraved with the Gucci logo on the exterior, while the interior has been embossed with Gucci's iconic GG pattern.

The rear face commemorates the year 2008 with a chic red and green logo. All functions are easily executed using lateral push buttons embedded in the smooth circular frame of the 44mm case. Its high-tech capabilities even allow the wearer to select a dedicated Beijing time zone code on the display.

The "8-8-2008 Limited Edition" collection also includes a unique bicycle, with bold red double GG leather details and collectable items such as a luxurious Mah Jong set covered in red "La Pelle Guccissima" and, to pay homage to China, a panda in soft leather. Though intended for leisure, the products bear the hallmarks of Gucci's impeccable quality.

Frida also proposes the bold "La Pelle Guccissima" for two pieces of luggage. The first is a chic, sturdy leather duffel and the other a soft leather messenger bag with Gucci's iconic green-red-green web on the shoulder strap. Also included in the collection are sports shoes, for both men and women, articulated in a fresh patchwork of suede, patent leather and gold trim and a necklace inspired by military tags, in sterling silver and enamel making it the perfect accessory for casual looks.

"La Pelle Guccissima" is, as usual, buffed and finished by hand and the products feature a specially created metal plaque that combines the interlocking GG logo and the year 2008.

As for the bold red that permeates this standout collection, Frida comments: "Not only does red evoke "Happiness" and "Celebration" - two emotions that couldn't be more appropriate to describe the excitement in the world of sports - but it also happens to be a very fashionable color for 2008! I also designed just 8 products for this collection, which mirror the lucky number 8 in Chinese culture".

Though the I-Gucci watch will be offered worldwide, all other designs of this special collection will be sold exclusively in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Product Pick of The week: Hella Jongerius' Porcupine Desk For Kids

Designer Hella Jongerius' Porcupine Desk provides children with a perfect place to play or draw. The small wooden table contrasts appealingly with the plastic chairs and also asserts a distinctive identity with its asymmetrical shape.

The table surface shows a printed motif resembling a charm bracelet, with animal shapes and other symbols attached to a chain link circle. Some of the links in the chain are bored through the tabletop, so that colored markers supplied with the desk can be stored in the holes. Add a little imagination, and the table resembles a porcupine— which is what inspired the name.

Materials: Legs and table top made of solid hornbeam, water-based coloured lacquer, screenprinting, includes a set of high quality felt-tip pens.

Spray It, Don't Say it: Harajuku Lovers Cute New Bottles By Gwen Stefani

Harajuku (hara•joo•koo) n. 1. A style and attitude of Japanese girls from Harajuku, Tokyo. n. 2. Anything goes: outrageous, layered, and eye-catching.

Harajuku Lovers Fragrance: n. 1. A fatal attraction to cuteness.

Inspired by the electric street scene of the Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo, the Harajuku Lovers fragrance collection captures the lyrics and iconography from Gwen Stefani's albums. These unique fragrances, in their adorable doll-decanters, will appeal to anyone with a "fatal attraction to cuteness." But given the reviews of the actual scents, I suggest you buy them for the bottle only.

Clearly aimed at a younger crowd than Gwen's previous scent, the cute little bottles are selling out fast already.

Made by Coty,(probably why they don't smell like 'good' perfumes) they are as follows:

* Love is a floral with top notes of sparkling bergamot, pink pomelo, peach and bamboo leaf mist; a heart of watery peony, living hydroponic lace rose, jasmine sambac, nectarine blossom, creamy paperwhites and Egyptian jasmine, and a drydown of petally ylang, creamy vanilla orchid, sensual musk and blond wood.

* Lil' Angel is a fruity floral with notes of raspberry, cranberry, blackberry and pineapple; a heart of pear blossom, candied violet and sugared rose, and a drydown of lollipop accord, hinoki wood and crystal amber.

* Music has top notes of clementine and sparkling pear; a heart of jasmine sambac, sweet pea and honeysuckle, and a drydown of vanilla, skin musk and sleek woods.

* Baby, has top notes of freesia, bergamot and white rose; a heart of orange flower, tiare flower and jasmine petals, and a drydown of white musk, soft woods, heliotrope, vanilla and violet.

* G has top notes of crisp mandarin, fresh coconut and apple skin; a heart of jasmine sambac, soft freesia and magnolia vapor, and a drydown of coconut cream, white sandalwood and cottonwoods.

Gwen Stefani sure knows how to market trends and this latest collection of stylized hip asian perfume bottles with sweet little scents named Love, G, Music, Lil' Angel and Baby is yet another example. Now, a lot has been said about Gwen's obvious obsession with asian anime and iconography. Even mad TV did a funny little spoof:

But despite the fact that Gwen isn't Asian (has anyone told her?), she's making an awful lot of yen.

Buy them here, along with all the Harajuku items.

Viktor & Rolf's Barbican Exhibit With Side By Side Comparisons of the Dolls & Fashions With The Runway Models

Welcome to the dollhouse. Viktor & Rolf's Dollhouse, that is. Dutch fashion design duo Viktor & Rolf, whose runway shows have become increasingly imaginative over the years, employing everything from models wearing their own lighting and scaffolding to soot darkened faces and bodies, are showcasing some of their best and most interesting designs in a uniquely Viktor & Rolf sort of way.

Having constructed a large dollhouse in whose rooms stand porcelain dolls (each doll approximately 2 feet tall) clad in their most memorable creations from the past fifteen years, Viktor & Rolf once again immortalize themselves in fashion history.

This summer an exhibition at the Barbican Art gallery in the UK put the duo's fashions on porcelain dolls in a giant dollhouse as well as on runways with films of past runway shows playing in the background. The fashions and dolls are arranged by collection within the rooms. About fifty 19th century dolls showcase some of their most memorable creations since all the way back to 1993, taking over the entire gallery.

The House of Viktor & Rolf: Dutch fashion design arrives at the Barbican
18 June 2008 - 21 September 2008, Barbican Art Gallery

I have laboriously and painstakingly found the actual full size fashions from their past runway shows since 1993 -- as well as almost all of the dolls from the Barbican exhibit -- and am putting them side by side for you to see for yourselves.

As shown above, even the hair and make-up on the bisque dolls replicate the look of the models and outfits.

The head of each doll is made by a Belgian expert who fires bisque faces traditionally and they are stunningly rendered with hand painted make up and hairstyles to match the models:

And if you thought having the outfit smaller makes it easier to make, you are mistaken; each dress reportedly took double the time a full-size one takes to make.

Above: Drawing on the Dutch tradition of silver plating a baby’s first shoe as a keepsake, the climax of Viktor & Rolf’s Autumn/Winter collection of 2006–07, was a strapless wedding dress with a wide petticoated knee length skirt, silver plated, including even the bride’s bouquet.

The Book / Publication:

Above: A 256 page hardback book, the most comprehensive on the work of Viktor & Rolf to date, including 400 fashion photographers, catwalk images and exclusive illustrations and polaroids, is available. Text by Caroline Evans and Susannah Frankel. Designed by FUEL. Published by Merrell in association with Barbican Art Gallery.

Designer Strollers For The über Hip Baby: Starck, Kate Spade, Lulu Guiness, Shanghai Tang, Lacoste & Burberry for Maclaren

What do hip designers Philippe Starck, Kate Spade, Lulu Guiness, Burberry, Shanghai Tang and Lacoste all have in common? They all design strollers, buggies, and more products for baby in collaboration with Maclaren.

Maclaren has consistently created revolutionary technology for baby strollers, buggies and prams and despite the loss of their founder, Owen Maclaren, continue to do so. In addition to their own nicely designed products, they have several collaborations with the aforementioned designers.

They also carry a line of "junior" sized baby equipment for children to play with:

About Maclaren:
It all began in 1965 when Owen Maclaren designed and patented his prototype Baby Buggy -- the B-01. The iconic blue and white stripes and aluminium frame imparts a vintage style that is popular and modern today. The revolutionary lightweight, 3D fold design continues to be an important and timeless prototype for the industry.

above: Founder Owen Maclaren

A former test pilot and aeronautical designer Owen Maclaren, created the iconic B01 buggy in the converted stables of his restored medieval farmhouse, Arnold House, in the village of Barby, Northamptonshire in England in 1967.

Based on Maclaren's knowledge as a retired aeronautical engineer and grandfather, the buggy had to be durable, safe, and lightweight. With a combination of modern materials like tubular aluminum, a durable structure that comfortably carries even a fairly large child, and 3D folding mechanism, the buggy weighed just 3kg/6lbs and fit into the same amount of space as an umbrella. The revolutionary design liberated parents from the bulky pram and quickly became an object of design and desire.

Above and below: So revolutionary was the design, that the buggy is included in Phaidon's Volume one of Design Classics:

Today’s Maclaren Buggys are descendants of the B-01 – from the lightweight frame, durable fabric, and one-hand fold -- to the above-industry standard safety features and innovative style.

Martin Klimas, a Dusseldorf Photographer, likes to blow things up. And I don't mean enlarging them, I mean literally making them explode. While he has a large portfolio of work, he has two series in particular that have unusual energy for still photography.

Below are images of his series of ceramic or porcelain figurines caught in the act of combusting.

And his series of flowers in exploding vases, expelling water and movement as the flower stays still and stoic.

Window, Aisle or Web? American Airlines Adds Internet To Their Flights

Hi, I'm Laura. Surf Me. (if you don't get that, you're too young.. ask your parents)

I hate to admit it, but when I heard this on the news, I got very excited (I know, I really need to get a life). Now I no longer have to use the flight time to merely clean up my desktop, read in-flight mags or clean out my purse. At least on American Airlines major routes I can work, blog, shop, send e-mails and photos, etc.

American Airlines has launched Aircell's in-flight mobile broadband service, Gogo.

Effective Aug. 20, passengers traveling on American's Boeing 767-200 aircraft can pay a nominal fee for Web access on select flights from New York to San Francisco, New York to Los Angeles and New York to Miami.

Available video includes general views of passengers using Wi-Fi devices onboard aircrafts as well as executive and consumer soundbites.

Hot off the presses and straight from American Airlines & Aircell. Here's their corporate press release: American is the First Airline to Offer Full Inflight Internet in the U.S. on the Entire 767-200 Fleet

FORT WORTH, Texas and ITASCA, Ill. – Marking the beginning of the next wireless revolution, American Airlines made history today with the launch of the mobile broadband service, Gogo™ provided by Aircell ®.

Effective today, customers traveling on American’s Boeing 767-200 aircraft can access complete coast-to-coast coverage on nonstop flights between New York and San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, and New York and Miami. American, the world’s largest airline and founding member of the oneworld ® Alliance, and Aircell, the world’s leading provider of airborne communications, have joined together to bring the first full inflight broadband service to the U.S. market.

“We are pleased to provide our customers with the unprecedented ability to stay connected to their family, friends and business associates on the ground via the Internet while traveling at 30,000 feet above the United States,” said Dan Garton, American’s Executive Vice President – Marketing. “With today’s launch, American Airlines makes history as the first and only U.S. airline to offer customers full inflight Internet connectivity, demonstrating once again our industry leadership and focus on our customers.”

Aircell’s Gogo will be available to customers as a fee-based service in all cabins. Aircell will charge $12.95 on flights more than three hours, which include American’s Boeing 767-200 flights. Each paid Gogo session includes full Internet access. Cell phone and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services are not available.

Gogo turns an American Airlines flight into a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling passengers to surf the Web, check any email, Instant Message, access a corporate VPN, and more. Once the aircraft has reached 10,000 feet, users can simply turn on their Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, smartphones and PDAs, open their browsers and be directed to the Gogo portal page where they sign up and begin surfing. Gogo is powered by the Aircell air-to-ground (ATG) Broadband System, which runs over Aircell’s exclusive nationwide network.

“Today, U.S. air travel changes forever. With Aircell’s unique ATG inflight Internet service, airlines finally have an economically viable option for providing the broadband connectivity passengers are demanding,” said Jack Blumenstein, President and CEO, Aircell. “American Airlines is the first to bring inflight Internet to market, and today the days of being cut off from the rest of the world while in the air become history.”

So, Will Other Airlines Follow Suit?

NEW YORK (AP) -- One of the few remaining Internet-free havens vanished Wednesday as American Airlines launched airborne e-mail, Web and other online services on some of its longer, nonstop flights.

The move could create a new stream of revenue for an aviation industry facing high fuel prices and other challenges. But it also could create new headaches as passengers retrieve sensitive e-mails and Web sites in confined quarters.

It also could end a common excuse people have to avoid checking "urgent" e-mail requests from their bosses. Unread magazines and books could now pile up as passengers devote their time aloft to electronic browsing.

American, a unit of AMR Corp., tested in-flight access on two flights on June 25. With Wednesday's launch, the airline is making service available for $12.95 per flight on its 15 Boeing 767-200 planes connecting New York with Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.

"Today the days of being cut off from the rest of the world while in the air become history," said Jack Blumenstein, chief executive of Aircell LLC, the company providing Internet services for American and other airlines.

Delta Air Lines Inc., Virgin America and US Airways Group Inc. are among the other airlines planning to test in-flight services.

JetBlue Airways Corp. offers free Wi-Fi service on one aircraft through its LiveTV subsidiary, limited to e-mail without attachments, instant messaging and some services from Amazon.com. Continental Airlines Inc. also plans to use LiveTV with similar restrictions.

Aircell's Gogo service is still formally a test, meaning American could drop it entirely after three to six months or expand it to other planes, depending on customer adoption and feedback. It can work with most laptops, Apple Inc.'s iPhone, some models of Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerrys and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

The system will block Internet-based phone calls, giving passengers relief from chatty seatmates.

However, American and other U.S. airlines have said they will not filter sites based on their content, raising the prospect of passengers surfing racy material with kids nearby. Airlines say they already have general policies to address unruly passengers, and those would apply as they do now to passengers who browse adult magazines.

Nudo: Adopt An Italian Olive Tree & Get Your Own Oil

I love this idea. Nudo allows you to adopt an olive tree on a hillside in Italy and reap the benefits (e.g. olive oil) that the tree produces for a year.

You get to browse the grove online and pick your own tree and then you can make arrangements (they say you are welcome anytime, just give them a call first) to go see it, water it, even hug it.

Below is the map of available olive tree groves and images of the trees within each grove.

They can also give you updates on how your tree is doing.

Once you've chosen and adopted a tree, the first thing you'll receive is an adoption certificate, to make you official, and your tree information booklet. Then over the course of the year you'll receive two more packages, one in the spring and one in the autumn, containing all the produce from your tree.

Above: Antonio at work, pruning your tree

Above: Tiberio, their organic inspector, makes sure your trees are pesticide-free

above: the local press

Above: your olives

Above: your oil

They call it "your tree" but in actuality, they collect your tree’s harvest with about 50 of its neighbors – to give us enough olives to press in one go.

Spring package:

This package contains your organically produced extra virgin olive oil. Each tree produces about 2 litres of oil a year and they guarantee a minimum of 1.5 litres. If your tree produces less than this, they'll supplement it with the finest oil from one of their other groves.

Autumn package:

This package contains more extra virgin olive oil, this time from their flavored range. For their lemon oil, they crush whole lemons along with the olives; for their chilli oil, they infuse the oil with fiery Sicilian chillies. You'll receive three different tins from the range.

For just $65 (+ postage & packaging) you’ll receive 3 packages over the year:
1. Spring package (all the extra virgin olive oil from your tree)
2. Autumn package (three flavoured extra virgin olive oils)
3. Personalized adoption certificate and booklet about your tree

Their oil has been described by the BBC as 'Italy's finest cold-pressed olive oil'. Their tins look at home in the very most la-di-dah of kitchens. They are carbon positive and all their oil comes from small scale artisanal groves, so buying from them helps ensure the life of farms that make the Italian countryside as pretty as a picture postcard.

Their address is

Working In A Cube? Try Working In An Orb: The Globus Workstation

Nope, it's not a space age prototype. It's an actual produced product. And it's available for purchase. Globus is a mobile work station (flexi-station) in two guises. In its closed form, this work station fascinates and intrigues-not unlike a modern office deathstar. It hides its function and intrigues onlookers.

In its open form, the work station is inviting and multi-functional. In fact, the Globus is a flexible, mobile, all-in-one work station with a work-top and a comfortable swivel chair. So there’s a place for you everywhere and at every minute of the day. A product of vision. A vision of what a flexible and mobile work station should be.

The Globus has been developed by Lande Productie Schijndel BV in The Netherlands for Artifort and Gispen. Designer: Michiel van der Kley

Construction: The Globus has a cast aluminum base on wheels supporting a moulded plastic globe with two sections. Once it is opened, the wheels a blocked. One half of the globe is a comfortable seat. The seat’s swivel action makes sitting down and standing up very simple. The other half of the globe hides a small table that can be easily adjusted for height.

The footplate can be powder coated in any color in the standard Artifort collection. The globe itself can be sprayed in any RAL color. The seat can be supplied in various colors of leather or fabric.

Uses: Globus is a beautiful, multifunctional, space-saving work station that’s equally at home in a public environment or an office. Would also be ideal for use in a hotel lobby or airport business lounge.

Made for Artifort & Gispen. Available at LIMN, San Francisco.

Symbio Design Loudspeakers; Alpha, Beta & EggO

The Alpha or Alfa (sic):

The design of the Alpha loudspeaker system is based on a baffle made from laminated composite. A bass-reflex tube is made the same way and, after the manufacturing process completion, it becomes an integral part of the baffle.

In addition, the bass-reflex tube orifice shape prevents the turbulence generation with air circulation in the tube, when a higher sound volume is set, which very often adversely affects the systems sound character and brings undesired noises into the performance. The shell is made with laying stress on the standing waves elimination without a single joint, so we eliminated pressure losses. The selected construction provides high shell rigidity with a big inner acoustic attenuation.

Parameters:
number of bands: 2
baffle type: bass-reflex
recommended placement: floor, shelf, in-wall installation, ceiling
total weight of the system: 5.5 kg/piece
max. high 580 mm, max. width 330 mm, max. depth 470 mm
Woofer:
response (1W,1m): 91 dB SPL
frequency characteristics: 40 - 4000 Hz
nominal impedance: 8 Ohm
weight 1,41 kg
long-lasting maximum power 75 W
short-lasting maximum power 250 W
Tweeter :
response (1W,1m): 92 dB SPL
frequency characteristics: 2000 - 25000 Hz
nominal impedance: 6 Ohm
weight 0,5 kg
long-lasting maximum power 90 W
short-lasting maximum power 220 W

The Beta:

Upon customer’s request, it is possible to individually change the standard high-gloss snow-white surface finish, which comes from ALFA, for any other colour of the RAL colour palette. Generally, the model is also supplied in black and silver colour.

The Beta loudspeakers are designed to be put on a table top or any other suitable place, including floor. We are also preparing light in-wall or ceiling installations. The minimalist solution assumes a simple connection to your audio system using the loudspeaker cable, which is the part of delivery.

Wideband loudspeaker system with an enclosed baffle. The system is bedded with two special FDS loudspeakers.

Parameters:
number of bands: 1
baffle type: enclosed baffle
recommended placement: floor, shelf, table, in-wall installation, ceiling

Waterproof Six-packs: "Guess the Olympic Swimmer's Abs" Is My Kind Of Game

Go ahead, tell me I'm practicing a double standard. That I'm shallow and contributing to sexism. It's completely true.... the Ab Fab slide show from NBC's Olympics website is totally sexist. But awfully yummy and nice eye candy as well as a test of your visual acuity for muscular chests. And if most female athletes actually had breasts or butts, we could play "guess the gymnast's tits" or "guess the volleyball player's butts." Actually, guess the Olympic female athlete's legs would be a good one.....

Mystical Yet Edgy: Unearthen's Bullets and Gemstone Jewelry

A little new age, a little punk and very unusual, Unearthen's jewelry combines raw precious and semi-precious gems and crystals with empty bullet casings suspended on 14k gold. oxidized or sterling silver chains. Unisex in their appeal, the casings are etched with the 'un' from their company name, and the semi precious and precious gems range from tourmalines and aquamarines to pyrite and quartz.

Each crystal has certain properties which are described in depth on the unearthen site and each piece is one of a kind, hand-crafted and takes approximately 4-8 weeks to receive.

Gia Bahm is the creator of Unearthen and lives and works in New York City, balancing her life between wardrobe styling and jewelry design, between summer nights in the woods and winter days on the streets.

The beautiful website by Base / Apex and the look books with photography by Steven Krebs and illustration by Amelia Bauer are worth checking out, even if the jewelry isn't your style.

You can purchase Unearthen pieces at Barney's, New York Adorned, Opening Ceremony, Colette, Steven Alan, and more. Check their site for listings.

Vitra Editions: Encouraging Experimental Design

Above: Vitra Editions Showroom

Vitra Edition is a laboratory that provides architects and designers with the freedom to create experimental furniture objects and interior installations.

Their choices of materials, technologies, applications and formal concepts are not limited to the existing Vitra vocabulary, while they have full access to Vitra’s technical know-how. Working without the constraints of market and production logic has a liberating effect and results in surprising solutions and new ways of seeing design.

Above: Chair by Rolf Fehlbaum

Above: the Duke and Duchess by Greg Lynn

above: Cork chair and table by Jasper Morrison

Twenty years ago there was hardly a collector’s market for experimental design, and yet Vitra Edition was widely published and discussed.

Above: the very first Vitra edition, 1987

With the first Vitra Edition twenty years ago, their motivation then, as now, was to escape from the strict norms and conventions of the furniture industry.

Vitra presented seating objects by Frank Gehry, Denis Santachiara, Gaetano Pesce, Richard Artschwager, Ron Arad, Shiro Kuramata, Ettore Sottsass and Scott Burton in 1987. In the years that followed, Vitra Edition grew with contributions from Jasper Morrison, Alessandro Mendini, Borek Sipek, Philippe Starck and others.

Above: Rocs by Ronan and Erwan Bourellec

Above: Kimono chair by Tokujin Yoshioka

The process of creating the Edition was liberating for Vitra and important new designer relationships were established. In its industrial production Vitra works with some of the most talented contemporary designers and architects. Exceptionally gifted, they have antennas to perceive the shape of things to come. Still, they have to embrace the fact that industrial production is under great pressure from price, performance, production technology and regulations. Such constraints are beneficial and necessary for the development of good everyday products, but they make it difficult for experimental ideas to be realized.

Above: Mesa tables by Zaha Hadid

Above: Office Pets by Hella Jongerius

Truly radical concepts are developed with a different set of criteria from those of industrial production; they emphasize certain aspects and consciously neglect others. While these experiments may only interest a small group of people, their impact can be substantial as they provoke new sensations and insights.

Above: the Slow Car by Jurgen Bey

Above: Lo Glo by Jurgen Mayer H.

Experimental objects often do not want to solve a practical problem; they are manifestations of the designer’s and architect’s creative intelligence, an expression of a critical position, a utopian wish or a formal fantasy. Whether some of the concepts will eventually inspire the design of everyday objects remains to be seen.

Above: Chairs by Naoto Fukasawa

Above: Moreover by Ron Arad

Above: New Order Chair by Jerzey Seymour

Vitra Edition is both a process and a result. As a process it contributes to our ongoing design research; the result, instead, is a collection of extraordinary objects representing some of the most advanced positions in contemporary design.

Above: es screen by Alberto Meda

Above: Landen by Konstantin Grcic

They are made available to collectors as a limited edition. The limitation guarantees the aspect of rareness, while – as a direct consequence – the substantial costs of creation and development are distributed on a small number of objects. In this respect Vitra Edition follows a logic which is different from Vitra’s industrial production. The objects of Vitra Edition are as diverse as their authors and reflect the wide range of interests that is characteristic for a Vitra project.

Above : The Vitra Design Museum

After the initial presentation on the Vitra Campus during Art Basel 2007, the new Vitra Edition prototypes are being shown in museums and galleries worldwide and were a big hit at the 2008 Milan Furniture fair.

Funky Find Of The Week:
Heelarious - High Heels For Infants

Okay, these scare me. But clearly they are meant to be funny, which they are. And, might I add, quite well produced.

Heelarious makes soft squishy high heels for infant girls (or for cross-dressing infant boys, I suppose). These are crib shoes, made for baby girls from 0 to 6 months and not meant for walking (obviously). I like to think of them as "Come Feed Me" pumps. (By the way, if you didn't get that, go here...)

Available in 6 different styles that include hot pink in satin or shiny patent leather, zebra print, leopard print, and of course... the wardrobe staple, black (also in patent or satin). They are cutely packaged in a little handbag and each pair costs $35.00. A nice little touch? Each has a little heart emblem on the sole.

Below are the available styles:

Sophie:

Kayla:

Brooke:

She's A Little Lady:

Kate:

The backstory (reproduced from their site):

The heelarious® Story

Britta Bacon & Hayden Porter are childhood friends turned business partners. While Hayden was completely obsessed with high heels, Britta wasn't even sure if she owned a pair. On her way to her daughter Kayla's 4th birthday party, Britta was reminiscing about when Kayla was a baby and Hayden's shoe obsession crossed her mind. She thought to herself "That would have been hilarious if I could have brought Kayla to a party in high heels when she was a baby". It was at that moment that ·heelarious® was born.

After 7 years of working together on various projects, Britta and Hayden joined their creative forces to launch ·heelarious®. With safety and comfort as their main concern, Hayden and Britta were successful in creating a soft, fully functional crib shoe designed to look like a high heel. The style names were inspired by their daughters, Kayla and Brooke.

May these shoes bring as many smiles and as much laughter to your life as they have to ours. We hope you enjoy ·heelarious® as much as we do.

· Britta and Hayden ·

So maybe you don't want your baby daughter cooing up at your from her crib while donning slutty little heels, but they sure make a fun gift!

Home Sweet Modern Home: Mid-century Masterpieces For Rent

If bullet planters, Nelson platform benches, Eames lounge chairs, slate rock, clerestory windows and dry heat set your heart a-beating, you might want to consider renting one of the following mid-century modern homes in Southern California next time you need to 'get away'.

Designed by such legendary architects as Rudolph Schindler, Albert Frey, William Cody, William Kisler, Frank Lloyd Wright and John Lautner the following homes are available as vacation rentals. Terms and prices vary - a lot. But one thing's for sure... they are all über hip.

Madras Oasis by William Krisel

The home was recently refurbished for today’s living including three bedrooms in 3,018 sq footage of indoor space. Landscape Architect, Steve Martino created a garden poolside-pavilion in the recent renovation.

Martino’s landscape canvas includes a 52-foot long wall in the back yard seen through the glass front-door of the home. The wall has a high-voltage color including a fireplace surrounded with desert flora of succulents and palms for a sunset feeling. The geometry of the backyard landscape with sculptural plants is set against the rugged backdrop of the mountains with beds of thorny ocotillos, strappy yuccas, and agaves.

Twin Palms by Stewart Williams

Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs home has four bedrooms (each with private bath), a full kitchen, cabana bar and a piano-shaped pool.

Designed in 1947 by Stewart Williams for Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, Twin Palms is a spectacular example of mid-century contemporary architecture in the heart of Palm Springs’ Movie Colony community. Located just around the corner from residences once owned by Al Jolson, Jack Benny and Cary Grant, this luxury vacation rental estate boasts both luxury and historical significance.

In this desert oasis, no house is complete without a pool. The one at Sinatra's place is shaped like a piano and comes with a cabana bar.

The home was also witness to some of Sinatra’s most memorable bouts. One of the most outrageous was when Frank threw then-wife Ava Gardner’s possessions onto the driveway after she appeared at the house in an attempt to catch him with Lana Turner. You can still see the chip in the sink where Frank threw a bottle in a rage.

Concierge services are available for an additional fee. Three-night minimum. $2,600/night; 877/318-2090, go here for more info.

Tomorrow's Transportation Today: The Uno by Ben Gulak

It has zero emissions, a simple on off switch, one wheel (okay, two wheels but they are really close together) and killer looks. And, it was invented by an 18 year old from Ontario.

The Uno by Ben Gulak. Tomorrow's Transportation Today.
Cost to Develop: $45,000
Time: 2 years

The inspiration for the cycle came when 18 year old Ben Gulak visited China in 2006 and was amazed at the overwhelming pollution that completely blocked the view of the surrounding country as his airplane came in for landing. He realized that much of that smog was coming from the thousands of motor scooters whizzing through the streets and figured that there had to be a better way.

Above: Ben Gulak, an incoming member of the MIT Class of 2012, rides the 'Uno'--a scooter-like vehicle he invented that was named the top invention of the year by Popular Science. Photo courtesy / Glenn Roberts, Motorcycle Mojo Magazine

The design he came up with has two wheels mounted side by side, very close together, and powered by electric motors. A computerized control system keeps the vehicle balanced, in a system similar to the Segway personal transporter. But unlike that vehicle, which is ridden in a standing position and is not considered a street vehicle, Gulak's "Uno" is ridden like a motorcycle and designed for ordinary roads.

Operating the Uno is so simple that it requires no controls at all. There is only an on-off switch. Once it's on, the driver accelerates by leaning forward, stops by leaning back, and steers by leaning to the side. By sitting upright, the driver can balance in one spot.

Above: inventor Ben Gulak with his Uno.

Gulak put off college for a year (now 19, he enrolls at MIT this fall) and began building the Uno at a motorcycle shop outside Toronto. He modified the frame from a Yamaha R1, which is wider than most motorcycles, so it can house the side-by-side wheels.

Above: Ben Gulak sits on his self-balancing electric “unicycle” in its early stages outside his home near Toronto. Photo by John B. Carnett

But he quickly realized that he was out of his depth in the electronics department: He would ride the Uno for a few seconds, and the circuitry would catch fire. So he contacted Trevor Blackwell, a robotics engineer who specializes in self-balancing software. With Blackwell’s help, Gulak equipped the Uno with a gyroscope and a control system that both keeps the rider balanced over the tires and manages the suspension.

The Uno’s two wheelchair motors should, theoretically, give it a top speed of 40 mph, but for safety’s sake, Gulak hasn’t taken it above 15 mph yet. “The only way to figure out if an alteration works is to jump on and ride the thing,” he says. “I’m pretty sure I chipped my kneecap in one crash.”

Gulak’s next task is reworking the suspension to handle more drastic leans, but he says he may need some help writing the code that keeps the Uno balanced at faster speeds. “The fundamental tech is figured out,” he says. “It just needs the right people to tweak it.”

Melissa is a socially and environmentally responsible company in Brazil that employs sustainable practices, treats their employees well (paying them above average wages complete with benefits), collaborates with hip designers and fashion icons (like Karim Rashid, Zaha Hadid and Vivienne Westwood to name only a few) to churn out millions (over 50 million pairs in the past 25 years) of environmentally responsible shoes made with a special patented recyclable plastic compound called MEFLEX. A shoe begins as a large orb of plastic and takes a only a minute to produce.

Plastic shoes? Yes, but these are far more chic, varied and even come in a 'flocked' or 'velvet' versions. Collaborations with some of today's hippest designers yield everything from "couture" plastic shoes adorned with crystals by J. Maskrey to super sexy high heels by the Campana Brothers and Alexandre Herchovitch you'd find hard to believe are plastic.

Funky Find Of The Week: Artist Wim Delvoye's Action Figure!

I have blogged, not once, but twice about artist Wim Delvoye (shown above at the exhibition of his action figure). His tattooed pigs and pigskins have always been a hit with my readers and provoke many controversial comments.

Well, now I found that there's actually an action figure of the Brussels artist that you can purchase!

size of figure : 34 x 37 x 15cm | 13.4 x 14.6 x 5.9in
medium : mixed media
edition : limited
description : packed in a Wim Delvoye-box

Marcel Wanders' Carpets For Colorline: World Carpets & Tartan Collections

In 2006 Colorline first cooperated with Marcel in designing the floor carpet for the MOOOI stand at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Afterwards together they developed several carpets for the MOOOI brand. This successful cooperation resulted in many new joint projects, including the World Carpets Collection and the recently released Tartan Collection.

WORLD CARPETS & TARTAN COLLECTION

Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has been inspired by different patterns from cultures all over the world. He combined several of these to create some remarkable new and attractive patterns that he used for rug designs for Colorline of the Netherlands.

The patterns are characterized by large elegant figures in which you can see depth, because the several patterns have been projected on each other. Three examples of these layered patterns are shown below:

Next to the basic patterns, Marcel created several color schemes, three examples of which are shown below.

Every color scheme consists of 4 different colors; every carpet with a width of 4 meters has 4 different colors of 1 meter each. The use of several colors in one carpet creates a special effect, especially for large surfaces.

Below are some examples of the results of combining the layered patterns with various color schemes:

For each application and atmosphere there is a color scheme in the program. Each color scheme has 2 alternatives A and B with a width of 4 meters. You can also choose for a combination of A and B to create a color scheme with a width of 8 meter.

With the sample generator found here and shown above, you can create your own samples for order by choosing patterns and color combination.

In addition to the World Carpets for Colorline, Marcel has recently created yet another line, the Tartan, for Colorline.

After the successful introduction of the project flooring line shown above called "World Carpets", Marcel Wanders and Colorline are introducing a brand new tile collection, named Tartan.

The collection has four individual characters that can be mixed into a beautiful composition of geometric lines, flowers and tartan. By mixing the four individual characters of the tiles it is possible to create separate spaces into every room:

Photos Won't Do It Justice, But Here's A Round Up Of Some Of The Best Photos From Last Night's Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics

If you didn't catch the 4 hour opening ceremonies for the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, I certainly hope you taped/tivo'd/recorded it. It's impossible to do the sensory impacting performance justice.

There has never been an opening ceremony even close to this one. The sights, sounds, colors, engineering, movement, enormous LCD screen, projection on the skrim that ran around the stadium's top edge, performers in perfect synchronization, singers, dancers, aerialists, martial arts, painting, calligraphy, tradition, modern design and production was absolutely spectacular.

Below are some of the best photos I could find (click on them to enlarge) from Xinhua, Reuters, the AFP, the AP, the SF Chronicle, and Getty Images.

And of course, the spectacular lighting of the cauldron by Chinese gymnastics champion Li Ning during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics held in the National Stadium, also knownas the Bird’s Nest, in north Beijing, China, Aug. 8, 2008:

Update: Italian Designer Fabio Novembre's Newest Products

In early 2007 I wrote about unusual designer/architect Fabio Novembre and reproduced an interview he did with Icon Magazine. Well, he's been a busy boy since then and 2008 proved to be a prolific year for him that included several lust-worthy items.

His "him" and "her" chairs are made from polyethylene and are available in black, red and white (but not the green). Produced by Casamania.

His collection of furniture called Histograms for Meritalia was also introduced this year:

His "slow the flow' water faucets are beautiful:

Above: His organic curving water faucets for rubinetteria stella, 2008

The above faucets are a nice compliment to his bathroom sink, toilet and bidet named the Void System, produced by Flaminia:

His crazy funky Divina sofa is produced in a limited edition by Driade.

The Divina is a reclining female figure built into the leather tufted sofa. Created on a stainless steel frame and stuffed with polyurethane foam.
Buy it here.

He also created this lovely series of 8 silver plated brass trays based on Piazzas (or town squares) in Italy for Driade. below are all the trays in the series which were first shown at the Draide showroom at the Milan furniture fair last April.
