Rabih Hage Turns Leftover Dupont Corian Into A Modern Furniture Collection.

To launch the new colors of Dupont Corian® for 2012, Corian® presented an international exhibition at Milan Design Week titled “Corian® Colour Evolution.” As part of the exhibition, UK designer Rabih Hage proposed original products made with 'leftovers' from the new colours of DuPont™ Corian®, alone or in combination with other materials.




The Leftover Collection

The focus of Rabih’s four designs is on the use of leftover material and its reuse, treating the off-cuts and discarded planks used in the building of furniture as a “noble material”, reused in new luxurious furniture pieces.

“I have always been fascinated by unused material or discarded cuts of stone, wood or metal whether chea or expensive. Reusing these materials as a luxury product and treating the off-cuts as something precious is my real motivation. Especially, DuPont™ Corian®, which I regard as a luxurious material. I like the imperfection in patinated antique pieces, and the patina of time is something impossible to imitate, therefore, authentic. To get closer to this authenticity I regard the random layering of off-cuts as a noble design gesture and authentic in the building of my new designs for “Corian® Colour Evolution”. Imperfection is beauty; a discarded material is as noble and precious as a newly polished stone,” explains Rabih Hage.

Stunning Modern Remodel Makes The Most Of A Small Space In A Sydney Apartment.

Here's a look at a recently completed remodel that makes great use of a small space for a couple who reside in the Vaucluse Waters Apartments in Sydney, Australia. The solution was designed by Rudolfsson Alliker Associates Architects.



The key aim was to maximize the feeling of space in a small apartment -and at the same to take advantage of the incredible views north east to the ocean- in this apartment fit-out in Harry Seidler’s ‘Vaucluse Waters’ in Sydney.

The approach was to remove every existing wall in the two bedroom apartment and to add back the bare minimum needed for a couple to live in. The clients were brave in their brief and in their trust in RAAA's proposals, and they ended up with a white base box of the original apartment and a Walnut wood veneered timber box inside that contained the required functions.

The timber box is solid to enclose the office, guest bath, and wardrobe (all accessible with pivot doors) and then breaks open to reveal the ensuite: a step up bath and the bed. This allows the owners to enjoy the ocean from the shower, bath and bed.

Where the timber box is opened it is lined in Calacatta marble (an Italian marble not to be confused with Carrera) , across the joinery, bath and ceiling. The rest of the apartment walls are lined in polyurethane panels that contain the kitchen, pantry storage and the TV cupboards.

Front Design Group Uses Their Own Doodles For A New Sofa Design for Moroso.

The new Doodle Sofa from Moroso was born out of a habit that many of us have- designers in particular. Created by the Swedish design group Front, all three members (Sofia Lagerkvist, Charlotte von der Lancken and Anna Lindgren) used doodles they had made during design meetings to create the sofa's pattern.




The name Doodle embodies the spirit of the new sofa for the modern italian furniture brand. Lines drawn distractedly on a sheet of paper, like doodles, become the decoration of the covers which are then embroidered and laid over the frame like a folded blanket.



The shape of the sofa is that of a folded semicircle whose ends become armrests naturally incorporated in the frame.




Front Design says:
"We doodle absent mindedly - doodling is a kind of half-conscious creative work. It is both a distraction, and also thought to help you concentrate on whatever you are doing at the same time.

The decoration is a kind of by-product of Front's creative process, inscribed onto the folded half circle of the sofa's form.

LED Wallpaper Is Now A Reality. Ingo Maurer and Architects Paper Have Brought It To Life.

For three years Architects Paper and lighting designer Ingo Maurer worked together to support the work on LED wallpaper.

Martin Hisge, Marketing Manager of Architects Paper, says "Product development takes time, the more so as alongside the pure wallpaper printing, a lot of new electro-technical work came our way for which we first of all had to find solutions." And the commitment paid off. With the LED wallpaper there is the first marriage of modern lighting techniques with proven non-woven wallpaper.




How It's Made
Optically, the wall covering as printed circuit board comes from there. According to the concept of Ingo Maurer, design and function go hand in hand. On white, red or green, matte non-woven wallpaper the conducting paths are printed double-sided as a closed circuit.



Distributed over them are white, red and blue LEDs. The red and blue diodes form optical cuboids with the white lights loosely and irregularly spread around them.

J.S. Dieber, the Product Designer at Architects Paper, who was significantly involved in the development, expects the new paper to create history. "Thus far, all the works of Ingo Maurer were design classics. The LED wallpaper has also the absolute potential to become that."

The wallpaper is dimmable, so it can be as subtle as you'd like:
