If You Think Damien Hirst's Work Is Trash, You're Right.
The New Damien Hirst Limited Edition Dotted Vipp Bin.

The internationally renowned artist Damien Hirst has created a limited edition of the Vipp bin exclusively for Astrup Fearnley Museet.

When Danish craftsman Holger Nielsen created the pedal bin in 1939, it was only intended for his wife’s hairdressing salon. Since then, the small waste bin has been on quite a journey and is now entering the colorful world of the internationally renowned artist Damien Hirst. An exclusive and limited collection will be presented at the opening of Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo, Norway on the 29th of September.

Damien Hirst: On the Spot:

Damien Hirst forged his place on the British art scene as a remarkable emerging artist in the late 1980s. When he in 1995 won the Turner Prize, his talent was further recognized, and his stamp firmly embossed on the global contemporary art map. He has now achieved superstar status in the contemporary art world.

The Vipp bin has been redesigned by Damien Hirst with inspiration from his world famous colorful spot design Chloramphenicol Acetyltransferase (shown below).

This is one of Damien Hirst’s most recognized art works and it has been designed in many variations since 1987.

“I ’ve always loved colour, playing with colour, moving colours around. Designing a Vipp bin using spots makes the Vipp bin joyful“ – Damien Hirst.

A limited number of the dotted bins will be sold exclusively from the Astrup Fearnley Museet. Price 3400NOK ($595.602 USD)

An Up-Close Look At Damien Hirst's Spin Flag For The Olympic Closing Ceremonies.

Artist Damien Hirst’s giant interpretation of the union jack flag filled the entire floor of the Olympic Stadium as part of the magnificent celebration of the arts in Britain.

In recognition of his central role to British art, a specially commissioned work by Hirst was included as part of the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. The colossal 130 meter wide red, white and blue spin painting covered the entirety of the Stadium floor and was filled with the celebrating Olympic athletes as they entered the arena. It is the largest reproduction of a Hirst piece ever produced.

The work, entitled ‘Beautiful Union Jack Celebratory Patriotic Olympic Explosion in an Electric Storm Painting’ (2012), was described by the Olympic committee as epitomising, “the dynamic, anarchic energy of British Pop Art.” It forms part of Hirst’s iconic series of spin paintings dating from the early 90s. Originally inspired by spin stalls at school fĂȘtes, Hirst describes the paintings as a, “massive explosion of energy, full of life, colour and optimism”.

A selection of key spin paintings, including a collection which rotate mechanically in eternal replication of their fabrication process, can currently be seen at Tate Modern’s major ‘Damien Hirst’ exhibition, on display for the Olympic period until September 9th.

Under Artistic Director Kim Gavin, the Closing Ceremony – entitled ‘A Symphony of British Music’ – was a celebration both of the achievements of athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the significance of Britain’s contribution to the international art and music scene over the last 50 years. Since Hirst first came to public attention in 1988, when he conceived and curated ‘Freeze’, an exhibition in a disused London warehouse of his own work and that of his contemporaries, he has become widely recognised as one of the most influential and renowned artists of his generation. Hirst's contribution is acknowledged by Tate Modern's staging of the largest survey of his work to date in the UK as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympics.

Pharmacy Restaurant Ashtrays by Artist Damien Hirst Now Available.

Contemporary artist Damien Hirst tried his hand at the restaurant business in 1998 when he opened the art-filled Pharmacy Restaurant + Bar in London. Filled with pseudo-scientific pharmacy-themed items, Hirst curated every design element from metallic pill-printed wallpaper and pill-shaped ashtrays.

The gourmet restaurant featured fine dining and cocktails with names like "Cough Syrup" or "Voltarol Retarding Agent" served up by a waitstaff decked out in surgically inspired outfits designed by Prada.

The Pharmacy restaurant closed its doors in 2003. Sotheby's then auctioned off the contents after the restaurant closure, with bidding ranging from £1,920 for a pair of salt and pepper shakers to £1.2m for a giant mock medicine cabinet.

However, these ashtrays weren't included in the Pharmacy auction at Sothebys on October 18th 2004, so now they are available for purchase from Other Criteria.
