Giant Glossy Lego® Storage Blocks In Nine Fun Colors.

A long time ago I introduced you to Lego-like furniture in the form of Luna Blocks. Now, fun new glossy plastic storage bins, officially licensed by Lego® and made exclusively for STORE, are available in 9 fun colors. Included in the collection is a large LEGO man head (also called a Minifig head).

The sad news is that they're so big, STORE can currently can only ship the LEGO storage boxes to UK, Ireland, BFPO and Benelux countries. They say it's simply too expensive to ship to North America, Australia etc., but have claimed they're working on it!

The large bins have 8 knobs, the small bins have 4. The LEGO MAN (minifig) storage head is available in one size only.

Misha Kahn's Cabinet. Everything In (And Out Of) It's Place.

An awesome cabinet project by student Misha Kahn. Raised in Duluth, Minneapolis, the furniture designer (RISD, class of 2011) devised a way to keep everything in its place. And a great looking piece when everything is out of it's place.

His (yes, Misha is male) description of the piece:
"After scanning the hoards of chachkis (sic)* lying on my bedroom floor I printed out life size puzzle pieces and arranged them into this curious thought bubble. Constructed of laser cut mdf, and pink foam, then fiberglassed and coated with molded polysterene. The interior is painted and flocked, with hardwood (dovetailed) drawers, and door. Stands 7 feet’ 6” inches high.
*I know he meant tchotchkes, I spoke with him ;)

See more of Misha's wonderful work at his site.
Thanks to Apartment Therapy for bringing Misha to my attention.

The Trendy-Tub: Recycled Storage Containers Become Furniture & More

The latest creation from Gérard Dumora and Jacqueline Lauth of Pacific Art Design is a smart and artful repurposing of basic cardboard and galvanized steel tubs.

The Trendy-Tub®, made in France, is an example of functional and fun eco design. Basically, it is a barrel made of a very resistant type of cardboard, encircled by two metal-rings and a lid made of galvanized metal.

The factory, from which Trendy-Tub buys the barrels, used to recycle the lids only because it is difficult to recycle products made of two materials - you have to separate them and it's a costly process for which you need special machines. This is the moment that Trendy-Tub intervenes by buying the barrels that once served only for transporting flour.

The barrels are like new, sometimes with little defects on the lid, which they easily fix by using a hammer.

The tubs are then decorated. Wrapped in a specially printed paper (the type used for billboards) and offered in two sizes. The designs are endless; Graffiti, Steampunk, Pop Art, Retro, Manga, Surf art, Baroque, Floral, Animal Prints, Plaids and so much more. Plus, you can create your own custom ones.

Here are a few examples to show you how varied the styles of art are:

The dimensions of the Trendy-Tub are perfect for either a chair or table. The small version has a height of 44.5 cm, a diameter of 41.5 cm and weighs only 3.9 kg. The big version is 74 cm high, has a diameter of 46 cm and weighs 5 kg. Both dimensions correspond to the standard-heights of seats and tables.

The Trendy-Tub® can be used in multiple ways: storage (dry dog food, laundry basket, cushions, blankets, etcetera), seat, table (bedside, console table, pedestal table). It's useful and decorative and finds a place anywhere, even in small interiors. They can transform the tub into furniture as well; coffee table, dining table, shelves and even pendant lamps.

Below is their booth at Maison et Object show in September, 2009

In addition to the simple tubs, they have turned the lids into clocks:

and wall art:

and chairs and tables:

and storage or shelving:

Pendant lamps and floor seats, all made from the same recycled tubs:

When the barrels arrive in their warehouse, they decorate them using “trendy” wallpapers or designs from artists, which they print on a special type of paper (used for outside-advertising posters).

Below are three very different examples of artwork available.

The choice of designs is huge, as mentioned above, and can be categorized in different collections: off-beat, humorous, artistic, childish, romantic, etc... and they can even customize your Trendy-Tub® with your own photos or logos. They also offer a raw-version.

Ivorilla Turns Fuel & Diesel Cans Into Hip Storage Cases

German company Ivorilla has taken the old 1930's flat Jeep metal gas cans and turned them into two styles of functional storage cases and luggage trolleys. The distinctive 47cm x 35cm x 16cm large canisters have a volume of 20 liters and can hold anything from undies to CDs.

By adding hard polymer heavy duty trolley wheels and aluminum telescopic handle, they've turned an old functional item into a new one with greater possibilities. The GasCase has a petrol-resistant lining to prevent corrosion and is made from robust 0.9mm thick pickled sheet-steel.

They have a "diesel" version and a "fuel" version, The diesel version opens from the side and the fuel version from the top. Below are both shown in blue so you can see the difference:

The dimensions are 47cm x 35cm x 16 cm and comes in two versions:
- Ivorilla® GasGase Fuel / Business
- Ivorilla® GasCase Diesel / Case

Ivorilla® GasGase Fuel / Business
The fuel version can be opened from the top and was initially designed for DJ’s to protect their vinyl when traveling towards their next gig. The GasCase has no limitations and lent himself easily to use for safe transportation of a Macbook, calculator, sneakers, dirty wash or your bread drum.

Available Colours: Black, Mini White, Red, Light Blue, Olive Green and Yellow

Ivorilla® GasCase Diesel / Case
The Diesel version can be opened from the side and is designed but not limited to protect your clothing from getting creased. From grandma’s underwear to your baby diapers the GasCase will look after them.
