Stephen Newby's Full Blown Metal. Stainless Steel Inflated Furnishings and Art.

Sculptor and artist Stephen Newby began working with inflating stainless steel back in 1995. Creating home furnishings and furniture, water fountains, art installations and sculptures with his unique process, he has turned a cold hard material into something that looks organic and inviting. Like glass, blown metal has beautiful transient surface finishes. And, like soft inflatables, it also has limitless shaping and size capabilities. Blown or inflated metal combines all of this with the strength, durability and permanence of metal.

The process of blowing or inflating transforms a hard industrial material into something that seems soft, organic and tactile, creating a new language in the production of three dimensional forms.

In 1996 he founded Full Blown Metal and in 2001, patented the process of inflating metal. Their first inflated metal chair appeared in Blueprint Magazine in November 1995, and they've been designing and manufacturing inflated metal products for commercial and domestic interiors & architectural applications ever since.

One of his products, the Squeeze radiator, created for Aestus, won the Best Product of the Year honor from the Northern Design Awards in 2012.

And in the small size:

Designer Stephen Newby, who has a background in engineering and art, explains his Squeeze radiator ...
“The process of inflating metal is curiously attuned to radiator design and shares certain similarities, which I find fascinating. For example the actual shaping of Squeeze comes from pumping high-pressure water into two sheets of metal. The appeal of designing radiators comes not only from a desire to create interesting and beautiful objects but also to create beauty with a high level of functionality so that performance is not sacrificed for looks. This design ethos is something that Aestus shares the same passion for … as well as a love of design and materials.”

Stephen has also created numerous public art installations and commissioned works for restaurants, public spaces and brands such as Louis Vuitton:

In addition to Full Blown Metals, Stephen Newby has another site on which he sells some of his custom made to order pieces such as wall sculptures, mirrors, water fountains and other items at Luxury Design and for a selection of prototypes and one-off pieces by Stephen Newby, go here.

Some of his smaller items, such as picture frames, ashtrays and pen holders can be found here.

Other pieces, such as bowls, trays and candleholders can be found and purchased at Balman Design

Gun Chairs (Or New York Chairs) by Sebastian Errazuriz

If you're not familiar with the witty yet urbane works of artist Sebastian Errazuriz, you ought to be. His tongue in cheek objects and installations are compelling and provocative, not to mention unusual. One of his fun projects is his collection of New York Chairs or Gun Chairs.

The Evolution of Today's Women's Day Google Doodle By Betsy Bauer.

You may have noticed that today's Google Doodle is in honor of Women's Day, which frankly, I had no idea existed. So how did this fun Google Doodle come into being?

Portraits Drawn On World and Celestial Maps by Ed Fairburn

above: Windermere, Pencil on a cropped map of the English Lakes – specifically Lake Windermere.

Cardiff-based illustrator Ed Fairburn sees things in maps most of us do not. His map-based portraits combine the art of cartography with the drawing of the human face. Making the curves and lines of the two dimensional terrain (or the heavens as is the case with his celestial drawings) blend with the curves and lines of human features brings a dimensionality to both the maps and the portraits. The combination of the two has a surprising appeal.

Cambridge (Ink on a vintage street map of Cambridge):

Both the Deutschland and Cambridge pieces shown above were produced as part of a wider submission to Cowbridge Music Festival.

Planisphère Céleste (Pencil on celestial star charts):

Der Gestirnte Himmel/The Starry Heavens (Pencil on celestial star charts):

The celestial charts are divided by many concentric circles starting from the centre – in keeping with this, the portraits have been formed by pencilling many concentric circles, placed and layered to suggest line and tone. On closer view, the smaller details blend with each labelled star shown on the maps.
Both works measure 30″ x 30″

About the artist:

Ed Fairburn is an Illustration graduate whose work is mostly figurative. He paints, draws and constructs using a flexible range of tangible media across a wide range of surfaces and contexts, allowing his practice to exist across various disciplines.

He says of his Map-based portraiture "Through my studies of the human form I examine the patterns and structures which exist across the body. I disassemble those structures and reconstruct them onto pre-patterned surfaces, including maps. The creative process involves synchronising both subject and surface. I search for similarities between the characteristics of the human figure and the topographical features of the map, resulting in a unique amalgamation."

Fairburn has exhibited internationally and has a collection of original works and prints available to purchase here. He is also able to work on a commission basis.

Two Design Firms Collaborate To Bring Us The Bunkie Pre-fab Home.

The Vision:
The Bunkie is like a cool, modern playhouse for grown-ups. The prefab structure is a collaborative effort between industrial design firm 608 Design and architectural design firm BLDG Workshop. The two companies share an intense admiration for the other's work and an affinity for seeking new answers to old problems and processes. In the case of the Bunkie, this involves reduced impact materials and adopting CNC detailing from furniture manufacturing for use in pre-fab construction.

The Plan
The need for this architectural type is easily identified, re-born to function more beautifully with regards to its purpose and aesthetics. By maintaining a transparent view of the site, the Bunkie is integrated into the landscape. Its multi-use nature responds to both expanding families and recreational applications via three operating modes: open, play and sleep.
