BUST-ED. Karin Jurick Completes Her 100 Faces, Paintings Of Actual Mugshots.

Today, one of my favorite contemporary painters, Karin Jurick, has reached a milestone. The incredibly talented artist completed her amazing series of 100 faces.

Titled BUST-ED, the project features individual loose studies of the human head, each painted from actual mugshots [with names concealed for obvious reasons]. For the past 100 days, she has painted the 4" x 4" portraits on masonite, one each day. They include men and women of all ages and races. Some are frontal, others are profiles - all are fabulous.

The very first painting in the series:

The 100th painting in the series:

All 100 paintings:

What began as a 'painting a day', that were going to be available for auction individually, was quickly pre-sold to one individual patron - much to my dismay.

Nevertheless, you can view each individual portrait on her BUST-ED blog or better yet, order the book she has created of them on Blurb. Available in hardcover or softcover, each has a page dedicated to the individual portraits.

The book features one portrait per page. here are some sample spreads:

Karin is truly one of the most skilled artists around and her works are quickly sold. Be sure to see her website and the galleries that represent her.

The Art of Art Appreciation: Paintings Of People Looking At Paintings

Above: Karin Jurick's Modigliani

Ever notice how many artists paint people admiring art? So that we observe the observer? There are quite a few, as you'll soon see. So many that I felt it deserved investigation and I found that despite the commonality of the subject, there are vast and numerous differences.

Kudos To Some of My Fave Artists: Karin Jurick, David Buckingham & Scott Rench

Karin Jurick
Congratulations to my dear friend and talented painter, Karin Jurick on her being chosen as a finalist in the competition for "People & Figures" by International Artist Magazine Competition!  Her painting "Strictly Pedestrian" was chosen as one of the featured pieces in the Dec/Jan issue.

David Buckingham
Congratulations to another good friend and talented metal artist, David Buckingham of Buckingham Studio, Los Angeles. Some of his fabulous wall-mounted 3D soldered metal letter art was commissioned for the masthead of William Safire's column in today's New York Times Magazine !

Of course, the online version screws up the colors, but in the actual magazine they look great and more like the original seen here:

Scott Rench
One of my favorite multi-talented artists is Scott Rench whose work finds it's way into and onto some of the most interesting shows and collaborations. Right now he has many pieces in the fabulous Fragiles Porcelain show at Design Miami as well as a T-Shirt for sale at the ultra hip Threadless and he has even created one of the now sold out everywhere limited edition bottles of Bong Spirit Vodka.

Great artist + Great Subject = Karin Jurick's Show, Opening Today.

One of my absolute favorite artists, Karin Jurick, has a show of one of my most favorite subjects; Dogs, opening today in Asheville, NC. In addition to her increasingly popular 'museum watchers' paintings, her paintings of dogs are getting scooped up before you can say "woof".

Believe it or not, only ONE of the paintings from her Dogs Rule series is still available (see below) and the show hasn't even opened!

The rest are already sold (all are oil on masonite measuring 6"x 6" and framed in a black float frame). But, if you aren't one of the lucky purchasers, nor are you able to attend her show in North Carolina, enjoy them here:

In addition to being a talented painter, Karin is obviously a dog-lover. When I asked her if I could do a post on her Dogs Rule series and show, she replied humbly and added "i think i could paint dogs every single day and be happy."

See her own 2 adorable pooches below:

For those of you who don't read this blog regularly I was the fortunate recipient of one of Karin's dog paintings in honor of my late companion, Abbey (see below).

I have been collecting Karin's work for years now and have a fondness for her heart as well as her art.

The show does not only have her dog paintings but also includes several other wonderful pieces. Go see it if you're anywhere near North Carolina this month. You won't be sorry.

Karin Jurick Continues To Impress Me

Karin Jurick is not only one of my favorite painters, she's one of my favorite people.

A beautiful woman, both inside and out (she no longer posts her picture on her blog, but I've seen it and she's so pretty), Karin's work is increasing in popularity and critical acclaim. I simply needed to put this up because I was so touched by the gesture. Please keep in mind, I've never even met Karin in person, but have long been in touch with her via e-mails since discovering her fabulous work and becoming a collector. Once she read my blog and saw that my dog, Abbey, who was recently diagnosed as terminally ill, suffered a stroke a little over a week ago, and is now nearing the end of her 14 years, she actually painted a portrait of her and sent it to me as a gift!

 Look!

I am touched beyond belief and wanted to share it with you all. It's people like Karin who make this world a better place, with both her work and her compassion.

Be sure to see her beautiful work at her site here

Karin Jurick, Feb. 3rd, Cohen Rese Gallery

Tomorrow is the opening of Karin Jurick's solo art show at the Cohen Rese Gallery on Sutter in San Francisco.

If you're not familiar with her work yet, you probably will be soon.

She has already pre-sold over half the paintings in her upcoming show and opening night has yet to occur.

Her vibrant and loose brushstrokes recreate places with which we are all familiar. Urban street scenes and beach venues as well as museums, libraries and restaurants. Yet she somehow takes these very public places and creates very private moments. Her work places the viewer in a voyeuristic position, peering in on people as they are caught in some very ordinary experiences having an extraordinary moment of reflection or privacy. In most cases, we can hardly see their faces.

Whether the subject is window shopping, reading or observing a piece of art on a museum wall, we get the sense that they are very engaged in what they are doing as we, simultaneously are engaged in watching them do this. The viewer doesn't feel like an 'intruder' however, because the composition and perspective are such that we are there, in the room with these subjects.

One feels a sense of quiet and calm when experiencing her painting which ironically are full of emotion. Making it very easy to look at these paintings for a long time.

Which is why I own four of hers. And hope to own more in the future.

The paintings above are a small preview of the show, but you can see more of her work on her site.

And if you're anywhere near San Francisco tomorrow night,
stop by the gallery on Sutter and tell her Laura Sweet sent you.
