The Largest Portrait Ever On Dutch Soil - Created To Promote Women's Rights.

The latest project by urban land artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada is best seen from the air, like much of his work. Created to raise awareness for the oldest International Women's fund, the soil portrait measures 125 by 170 meters larger than a football field and incorporated no less than 8 km rope, 7 tons of straw, 150 cubic meter of soil, 300 cubic meters of sand and 1150 wooden poles.

Mama Cash asked Rodriguez-Gerada to create a large scale art piece in Amsterdam on International Human Rights Day – Dec. 10, 2012 – to bring attention to their latest campaign, "Open Your Eyes," to raise awareness about Mesoamerican women who defend human rights.

The press release:
Groundbreaking launch of the Vogelvrije Vrouwen* women human rights’ defenders campaign (Amsterdam)

Internationally renowned urban and terrestrial artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada has come to Amsterdam (Zuiderzeedijk) to create a huge land portrait, made of fertile soil, spanning almost two football fields, to launch the campaign Vogelvrije Vrouwen – Defend women who defend human rights!, an initiative in support of women human rights defenders in Mesoamerica.

The portrait - the largest ever on Dutch soil - shows a fragment of the face of an anonymous MesoAmerican woman human rights activist. It was commissioned by feminist foundation Mama Cash and created in one week with the help of 80 volunteers by Cuban American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada. Rodriguez-Gerada is known for his spectacular temporary urban art projects all over the world.

The portrait measures 125 by 170 meters larger than a football field. There were no less than 8 km rope, 7 tons of straw, 150 cubic meter of soil, 300 cubic meters of sand and 1150 wooden poles needed to make the portrait. The contours will slowly fade under the influence of wind and weather.

* The phrase Vogelvrije Vrouwen in Dutch has deep literal and figurative meaning. 'Vogelvrije' literally means 'free as a bird' but also has the connotation of a person who is outside the boundaries of the legal system, someone who is not protected by the law. 'Vrouwen' means 'women', thus the campaign slogan, Vogelvrije Vrouwen, sheds light on the women whose struggles for justice and freedom are threatened by institutionalised impunity.

About the Vogelvrije Vrouwen campaign:
International women’s fund Mama Cash and the Mesoamerican Initiative for Women Human Rights Defenders are launching the Vogelvrije Vrouwen campaign – Defend women who defend human rights! to call attention to the violent situation faced by women human rights defenders in the Mesoamerican region. The project is funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery. It is difficult to imagine living in a context where violence is ‘normal’, where criminality and corruption are rampant, and where the government does little to protect you and where people risk their lives by daring to denounce violence, criminality and the violation of human rights. But this is the daily reality in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Dozens of women’s rights activists are murdered there each year. And others are threatened and raped, their houses set on fire and their families terrorised.

During the coming year, the Vogelvrije Vrouwen campaign (www.vogelvrijevrouwen.nl) will give visibility to the imperative work being done by Mesoamerican women’s rights activists. The campaign will provide the Dutch public with petitions and other means to put pressure on the Dutch government and governments in the Mesoamerican region to make the defense of women human rights activists a priority. This campaign is made possible by a grant from the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

Droog's New Hotel In Amsterdam Opens September 16th. See All That It Has To Offer.

At the historical centre of Amsterdam, on September 16th, 2012, Droog will open a hospitality experience like no other. Hôtel Droog is a place where you can come for a drink, a bite to eat, exclusive shopping, exhibitions, beauty advice, a stroll in the garden, a lecture series, or even a bed for the night. Featuring the Droog Store, Gallery, Dining Room, Fairy Tale Garden, Beauty at Cosmania, Fashion at Kabinet, Products at Weltevree, and the one and only Bedroom, Hôtel Droog is conspicuously housed in 700 square metres in a 17th century building, promising to be a new cultural home in the heart of Amsterdam.

“The concept of a hotel has been reversed. Whereas a hotel is usually mostly about sleeping, here we have enlarged and emphasized all the aspects that many hotels also offer and made them central to the hotel experience—and it even has a room to sleep in,” says Renny Ramakers, co-founder and director of Droog. “Hotel Droog brings all of our activities under one roof—from curation to product design, exhibitions and lectures—and invites people to plug in as they choose.”

The new hotel, a 10-room member-only hotel, concept restaurant and exhibition space was designed by Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow.

Leaving the canal-facing front façade intact, Atelier Bow-Wow created an intricate inner courtyard façade inspired by Amsterdam’s historic architecture.

The hotel restaurant will host new concept dinners by invited designers and chefs, improvising with local market left-overs and practicing the act of eating slowly yet attentively.

The street level will house an on-going program of Droog exhibitions and events.

EXHIBITIONS at GALLERY

The Gallery is an exhibition space curated by Droog or by specially invited curators. This prominent and beautiful 160 square metre space features the latest in design, art, and fashion and previews upcoming developments in the creative industry. The Gallery aims to create a dialogue between design and society by hosting workshops and discussions.

ESCAPE at FAIRY TALE GARDEN

Enter a magical fairy tale garden. Designed by French Designers Claude Pasquer and Corinne Détroyat, the courtyard has been transformed into a shelter for biodiversity, where natural and artificial elements intermingle.

All elements are functional, attracting, feeding, watering, and providing respite for birds, butterflies, insects, flowers, edible plants and humans alike. Mixing seamlessly with abundant plantation, synthetic turf covers the winding pathways to create a sense of stillness. The garden is a real mixture of serenity and joy.

FOOD, DRINKS & DISCUSSIONS at THE DINING ROOM
The Dining Room is a simple, elegant and airy room that overlooks the flourishing garden. Enjoy some of the neighbourhood’s finest homemade recipes or freshly made smorrebrod sandwiches.

The menu is bound by one philosophy: simple, healthy, delicious dishes created with well-sourced and seasonal ingredients.

The Dining Room is open for lunch and special events, lectures and performances. In honour of the building’s history as home of the textile guild, Droog commissioned Dutch artist Berend Strik for a reinterpretation of Rembrandt’s famous De Staalmeesters, a painting that once hung here.

The top floor of Hotel Droog is for guests who might like to stay the night or more. Central but quiet, the brightly-lit space, with bedroom, living area and kitchen, provides a superb view over Amsterdam rooftops.

Clever Commentary Jewelry by Amsterdam Designer Sacha Lannoye

Amsterdam based product designer Sacha Lannoye has a clever line of jewelry and accessories for the neck and body that make a commentary on society. Gold-plated and silver-plated brass necklaces, brooches, nameplates for shoes and belts are engraved with words that suggest more than just decoration.

Blablabla and YadaYada:

above and below: "Blablabla" and "YadaYada" are persiflages on the well-known golden necklaces of someone’s name. "Blablabla" and "YadaYada" anticipate the superficial side of communication between people. For those who wear it, as well as for the viewers "Blablabla" and "YadaYada" confronts and shows the relativism of things.

size: 80 x 14 x 1,7 mm
material: gold-plated / silver-plated brass

Flowers For Your Lapel:

above: People are constantly looking for renewal. At the same time they want recognition to see the obvious. "Brooch", "Red Rose" and "Corsage" are representations of the actual thing.

Size: 47 x 14 x 1,7 mm
Material: gold-plated / silver-plated brass

Max 20 kg:

above: "Max 20 kg" makes people think about the absurdity to strive for the perfect body. But what do we perceive as "the perfect body"? No healthy woman, old enough to walk on high heels, can measure up to this required weight limit. It indicates that nobody’s fits this propagandistic ideology of the body.

Material: leather, gold-plated / silver-plated brass

Size Zero:

above: A golden or silver label is attached to this belt, which reads "Size 34" (unfortunately, this is a European size, not U.S. sizing so it doesn't make as much sense in the states). The label covers up the original jeans-label that would reveal your real size. "Size Zero" criticizes the pressure society puts on woman towards their appearance. Lots of woman get frustrated, even obsessed by wanting to look skinny.

Size: 88 x 58 x 1,7 mm
Material: leather, gold-plated / silver-plated brass

Workaholic:

above: "Workaholic" is a necklace that mocks with people who are obsessed with their work. It's a customized, golden business card, which you can wear as jewellery. This thick golden plate also functions as a small carrying case for your own business cards.

size: 62 x 89,7mm x 7mm or 89,7mm x 62 x 7mm
material: gold-plated / silver-plated brass

about the designer:
Sacha Lannoye studied product-design at the academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (ABK). She currently lives and works in Amsterdam.

There are many beautiful and practical products available all over the world.
Despite the overkill of these products, caused by mass-production, people's needs remain unfullfilled.

Sacha Lannoye occupies herself with these subjective needs of people. Her products represent her way of thinking, which is a response to human behavior. She strives to combine content, function and aesthetics in a way that they reinforce each-other.

By putting recognizable ingredients in a new context, products pass out a message and show people her astonished, ironic view of the world. Therefore they become powerful tools, reaching beyond material matter. (text courtesy of soonsalon)
