Skull Chair, Brain Ottoman & Spine Lamp. The Vanitas Collection by Vladi Rapaport.

A collection of products inspired by the Dutch "Vanitas" still life paintings from the 16th and 17th century. The characteristic type of symbolic still life painting is the one where the symbols of emptiness, time and death were placed on the canvas as a reminder of the vanity of one's earthly life.

Murano Glass Skull Chandeliers By Philipp Plein

For Philipp Plein, the skull is deemed to be a symbol for art, beauty and the celebration of life. The motif plays a central role in the design of the 31 year old designer and is a highlight of the new Murano crystal collection.

At MAISON&OBJET in Paris for the first time PHILIPP PLEIN presented its new Murano crystal collection to the international Interieur scene. Besides the impressive chandeliers the collection includes also drinking glasses and vases, all made in Italy. Every item is unique and intricately crafted by the hands of Muranos best glassblowers.

The shining stars of the new collection are the chandeliers. These appear in the three designs black, white and crystal and in two different sizes of 1,5m x 1,2m and 0,8m x 0,9m. The big one is composed with 105 glass elements, including fifteen delicate skulls, stars and romantic flowers with stalk.

Just In Time For Halloween; More Wild Skulls By Artist Damien Hirst

above: one from each of Hirst's series; Hypnotic, Transcendent and Hallucinatory Heads.

A lot of blogs have been covering artist Michael Leon's colored gypsum skulls lately and I've seen many a post on everything from crayon skulls to skull flash drives. But if you're an art fan and a skull fan, I can't think of a more fun combination that the series of Damien Hirst's 'spinner' painted skulls.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with artist Damien Hirst's diamond and platinum skull. Lauded as the singularly most expensive piece of sold art at 100 million dollars, the skull, titled "For The Love Of God".

above: For The Love Of God, the 100 million dollar diamond encrusted platinum skull by Damien Hirst

A common theme in his own, as well as many other artist's work, Hirst has created several other versions of skulls that you may not know about and that are available for purchase.

In this latest series of 50 painted skulls are three categories manifested as three variations of form: Hallucinatory Head, Hypnotic Head and Transcendent Head, with each skull a unique result of the now famous and highly sought after ‘Spin’ painting technique.

The skull is one of a number of recurring motifs not only in Damien Hirst’s work but also in the history of art, and in this special edition has been reworked back in to his signature. The technique is simple but the result relies on complex ideas about mortality and the history of mankind, touching on specific anthropological and historical readings, with compelling, celebratory and seductive results.

A suggested memento mori of a more uplifting and contemporary slant, Hirst’s proximity to the subject of death is ever fresh, rewarding and daring, seeking to challenge the often morbid art historical approach to the subject. His skulls engage, they fix us with their own kind of gaze, imploring us to see the comedy within them. Here, the image of death is less unknowable, more approachable, a little lighthearted, even, whilst possessing something of an ancient relic or offering to the gods. Influences of the Mexican celebration, Dia de los Muertos, fuse ritual and anthropology with ornament, demonstrating the crux of Hirst’s practice wherein the philosophical and eternal become part of the vocabulary of modern life and modern aesthetic.

Denise Saffren:
Original Art Buckles

I am so happy to have found Denise Saffren and her beautifully cast and equally cheeky belt buckles. With both wit and talent, she has managed to create some very fine and very fun functional pieces of art.

She casts in everything from solid sterling silver to white bronze and brass. Some of her pieces have inlays of stone or glass and she does custom work as well.

Her belt buckle designs vary from tattoo and seventies inspired imagery (you know..... mud flap girls, trucks, skulls, flaming hearts, vegas , etc) and has the requisite new age imagery (fairies and mermaids) to my personal favorite....the "chastity' belt buckle.

Just take a look:

From her own site:
Denise Saffren is a professional sculptor in the corporate world.
Welcome to her escape.

In 2000, having little time to create anything bigger than a buckle, she decided to start her own buckle line. In 2001, her first series of buckles were created for her company All-Ready Design. As the buckles began to sell, she decided that this would be the perfect way to feed her own creative yearnings, on her own terms and on her own time.

Since then she has created over 20 buckles for her own line and various custom buckles for Singer/Songwriter Alana Davis, Lukaro Hair Salon in Beverly Hills, Tsunami Sushi, and Delicious Vinyl. Many celebrities own her buckles...P!nk, Linda Perry, Gina Gershon, Jorja Fox, Paul Stanley, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kid Rock and Kat Von D from Miami Ink. Denise has donated many buckles to Heal the Bay, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Hudson River Foundation, among other charities. As of 2006, she started to brand her buckles with her own name and signature, DENISE.

Before now, you could only buy her buckles either by bumping into her on the street or at Firefly on Abbot Kinney in Venice,CA, Ragg Mopp on Sunset Blvd. in Silver Lake or at the Abbot Kinney Street Festival where she has been a staple for 6 years.

New designs are always on the horizon, so please sign the mailing list or check back often for her latest creations. Coming Soon! New and matching pendants for some of her favorite buckles! Plus new buckles.

you can reach the artist at her e-mail: info@denisesaffren.com
