Reclaimed Wood Mixtape Coffee Table by Jeff Skierka Goes Into Production.

This unique handmade coffee table has been getting so much buzz that Seattle-based designer/craftsman Jeff Skierka and his partner, graphic designer Roslyn Hyde are working as fast as they can to get it into production.

The Mixtape Table is a 12:1 scaled replica of a cassette tape turned into a functional coffee table. Made of reclaimed maple, walnut and lucite, the 47.25" x 30" x 5" handcrafted piece has a protective 3/8" plexiglass top. The table is completely reversible to feature sides A and B.

The first prototype and one of a kind table has been quickly gathering attention across the internet, with many fans requesting its production.

Jeff and Roslyn are responding to the demand with future versions which will be CNC machined out of high grade plywood (with a variety of ply combinations) and a glass top. Both plywood and handmade hardwood versions will be soon available.

above: Jeff and partner Roslyn in their Seattle workshop

According to Roslyn, Jeff is speaking with manufacturers with CNC capabilities, water jet cutters for the glass top, visiting local plywood and hardwood suppliers, among a list of other things over the next couple of weeks. He is planning on having a rough estimate for the plywood Mixtape Table by the end of the week. Jeff will also be creating 1 or 2 more prototypes as well. If you are interested in a hardwood handmade table, those will also be available to order soon.

The Eigen Coat Stand. Stunning In Its Simplicity and Formidable In Its Functionality.

This elegant Eigen Coat Stand by designer Leonhard Pfeifer (shown above with his creation) was just awarded a 2012 Design Guild Mark from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers in London which recognises excellence in design, use of materials, manufacture and function.

As functional as it is beautiful, the wood coat stand looks great empty or laden with coats, hats, umbrellas or canes.

Leonhard describes his Eigen Coat Stand:
While many “designer” coat stands are available to the contract market, there is a limited selection of affordable contemporary coat stands for the domestic market. I was drawn to the geometrical strength of the design and to the practicality of the vertical elements with horizontal joining members, both of which act functionally to provide areas to hang coats, scarves, bags and the like, but which also form strong design elements. The proportions minimise the footprint for compact entry halls, while ensuring a sufficient base to maintain stability.

The brief required a wooden coat stand with a sculptural appearance made from wood - the finger jointed solid oak is certified FSC and is sourced from sustainably managed forestry resources. The Eigen Coat Stand has already launched with John Lewis in the UK and will be available shortly in France, Switzerland and Italy. The home assembly aspects of the coat stand are an important consideration and we have clear step-by-step instructions. The design also flat-packs very economically, producing a compact package that can be carried home by car or public transport.

The Eigen Coat Stand is manufactured by European furniture brand Woodman. Designer Leonhard Pfeifer was born in New Zealand and established his studio in London in 2003 from where he works with furniture manufacturers internationally.

Levi van Veluw Recreates His Childhood Room in 30,000 Wooden Blocks, Balls & Slats.

Levi van Veluw's incredible, 3-room installation uses more than 30,000 wooden blocks, balls, and slats. These installations are inspired by different aspects of van Veluw's boyhood bedroom, where he spent many solitary hours between the ages of 8 and 14: the Origin of the Beginning.

This series of installations, photographs and videos in which van Veluw draws from his own childhood memories to thematically and narratively develop his own brand of self-portraiture.

The artist has created 3 “rooms” covered with more than 30,000 wooden blocks, balls and slats respectively. Each “room” is executed as a life-size installation (4m x 2.5m x 2.5m) together with photographs and videos (without any digital manipulation).

Portrayed in one piece (above) is a desk, a table lamp, a bookcase. The edge of the table is burned by Levi van Veluw as he had an obsession for fire. All of these objects including every inch of the floor, walls and ceiling is covered in the same material: 14,000 16 cm2 dark brown wooden blocks. The blocks are made by the artist and glued on the wall one by one. The works suggest a narrative world behind the abstract portraits.

On the one hand these works present themselves as a continuation of van Veluw’s formal approach to self-portraiture, with their preoccupation for materiality, pattern and texture. Yet they are simultaneously very personal pieces. The repetitive structures seemingly express a ‘horror vacui’ and recall van Veluw the youth and his obsessive attempts to gain control on his life by gaining control of his surroundings. Dimly light and dark in colour the overriding tone of these pieces are claustrophobic and sombre, exuding a sense of loneliness. The meticulous craftsmanship and high quality material with which every last nook and cranny is covered, result in a series of works that are also highly aesthetic.
