Mad For Ads? Taschen Publishes New Book on Ads from the Mad Men Era

Gleaned from thousands of images, this companion set of books offers the best of American print advertising in the age of the “Big Idea.” At the height of American consumerism magazines were flooded with clever campaigns selling everything from girdles to guns.

These optimistic indicators paint a fascinating picture of the colorful capitalism that dominated the spirit of the 1950s and 60s, as concerns about the Cold War gave way to the carefree booze-and-cigarettes Mad Men era.

Also included is a wide range of significant advertising campaigns from both eras, giving insight into the zeitgeist of the time. Bursting with fresh, crisp colors, these ads have been digitally mastered to look as bright and new as the day they first hit newsstands.

The editor:
Cultural anthropologist and graphic design historian Jim Heimann is Executive Editor for TASCHEN America, and author of numerous books on architecture, pop culture, and the history of the West Coast, Los Angeles, and Hollywood. His unrivaled private collection of ephemera has been featured in museum exhibitions around the world and dozens of books.

The contributing author:
Steven Heller is the co-chair of the School of Visual Arts MFA Designer as Author Program. For 33 years he was an art director for The New York Times, and currently writes the "Visuals" column for The New York Times Book Review. He is the author of 120 books on graphic design, illustration, and satiric art.

GRADMEN: Creative Circus Enlists Creative Directors To Woo MADMEN's Jon Hamm.

As the Atlanta-based Advertising school students tell the story it all happened one Sunday night. Inspiration struck a few booze-laden advertising students while watching the ad industry's favorite tv drama, Mad Men on AMC. They decided to start a side project to bring actor Jon Hamm to speak in character at their graduation as Don Draper.

The Challenge:
To get get actor Jon Hamm to speak in character as Don Draper at The Creative Circus graduation.

The Video Plea:

The President of the One Club, Kevin Swanepoel, even sweetened the deal with the offer of a Gold Pencil for Best Fictional Creative Director Ever:

MADMEN Your Living Room! DWR & AMC Promote Season 4 With A Sweepstakes

If you're a fan of the AMC TV period drama about advertising, chances are you've already MADMEN-ed yourself. So, what to do next? How about a chance to MADMEN your living room?

In celebration of the much-anticipated fourth season of AMC's "Mad Men," the network and modern furniture store and company, Design Within Reach, announce a collaborative promotion to give one winner a chance to "Mad Men" his or her living room with a collection of new furniture that embodies mid-century modern aesthetics.

The Grand Prize is two pieces from DWR's exclusive Raleigh collection, the Skagen Coffee Table and Nesting Tables, and the Strata Rug, and the AJ Floor Lamp designed by Arne Jacobsen. (The winner may choose from in-stock fabrics and colors.)

colors and fabrics:

Four first place winners receive "Mad Men" Seasons 1, 2 and 3 on DVD.

Raleigh Armchair and Sofa:

Raleigh is a comfortable, modern collection that draws from mid-century Danish design. Wrapping around the back of this Armchair is a solid walnut frame that brings visual lightness and satisfying aesthetic tension to the design. The collection includes an 85" Sofa, Two-Seater 60" Sofa and Armchair, available in various colors.

Skagen coffee table and nesting tables:

Inspired by the mid-century designs of Arne Hovmand-Olsen, the walnut wood Skagen Table Collection (2009) includes this set of two Nesting Tables, as well as a Coffee Table.

AJ Floor Lamp:

Arne Jacobsen's AJ Floor Lamp (1960) echoes the oblique angles of his Series 3300 furniture, which included the Egg Chair and the Swan Chair. The heavy cast iron base of the lamp is a sloped wedge with a circular cutout that was originally designed to hold an ashtray and to maximize the lamp's functionality as a reading light, Jacobsen created a shade that tilts up or down, directing maximum light to where it's needed.

Strata Rug

The hand-knotted Strata rugs (2009) are handmade from wool using a technique that was inspired by a method for tying Tibetan knots. To create the structure of each knot, a stainless steel rod is temporarily placed along the width of the rug. The yarn is then wrapped around the rod, knotted and then wrapped again, with the process continuing for the entire length of the rug. The quarter-inch pile height won’t interfere with the opening and closing of most doors. The manufacturer is a member of Rugmark, the global nonprofit organization fighting to end child labor and improve educational opportunities for children in India, Pakistan and Nepal.
Available in various colors.

"Viewers of 'Mad Men' are already fans of the elegant, iconic furniture on the show, so a promotion with AMC was a natural for us," says DWR President and CEO John Edelman. "We are passionate about modern design, whether it's a contemporary take on mid-century lines, such as our Raleigh and Skagen collections, or original designs licensed by the manufacturer, like the AJ Floor Lamp by Arne Jacobsen, legendary creator of the Egg™ Chair."

Now through August 4, the "Get the Look of Mad Men" Sweepstakes is promoted in every Design Within Reach retail location, in more than 50 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Visit dwr.com/madmen to enter the sweepstakes and to view the complete Official Rules.

The season premiere is on Sunday, July 25 at 10pm EDT/CDT.

The Woman Behind The MadMen Art, Icons, Wallpaper & Illustrations

Seems that AMC's MadMen just keeps growing in popularity- especially with the "MadMen Yourself" promotion, which is why, just before their third Season Premiere, I wanted to rerun this post introducing you to the artist behind the images.

The post below originally ran on October 14th, 2008 and is being run again with an addendum as well as some new images:

AMC's Mad Men is the hot tv show du jour. With multiple Emmy nominations (two wins, including one for Best Drama) and a rapidly growing cult following, it's been the subject of many a water cooler conversation.

Graphic designer/illustrator Dyna Moe (hopefully a psuedonym) has done an honor to this show by capturing it in her many whimsical retro styled illustrations that can be downloaded as wallpaper for your computer from flickr or available for purchase here.

So, how did she get into this? She's clearly a talented illustrator and graphic designer and was asked to create a Christmas card for Rich Sommers, who plays character Harry Crane on the show, to give to his office mates. Seems that a passion was born because that was just the beginning.

She then began drawing a commemorative image as desktop wallpaper from each episode (sometimes more than one) and has created downloadable icons, iPhone wallpapers, placemats and more. Customizable prints of her most popular illustrations are for sale through zazzle.com.

On flickr, she describes herself as follows:
"I'm a freelance illustrator and designer in New York City, who also does comedy on occasion. Sometimes at the same time.

The bulk of my work is for the alt comedy scene -- flyers, posters, logos, etc. I have been the unofficial official house designer for the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NY since 1999. I also have done a ton of CDs and 7" designs for local indie pop/punk labels."
Well, she's certainly busy. And funny. I enjoyed reading her commentary on both her blog and flickr as much as I enjoyed her illustrations.

Her blog, "I let My Fists Do The Talkin'" can be viewed here.
Below is a series of downloadable icons, the perfect 'must have' for any Mad Men lover.

She's been so prolific that I can hardly share all her work with you, for that you'll have to visit her set of Mad Men illustrations on flickr or her website.

Here are just a few of her renderings from seasons 1 and 2 of Mad Men:

A generous soul, she writes "Feel free to download and use any of them as wallpapers or write in your blog or website about them. I give everyone blanket permission to do so... you don't even need to ask. Just stop with the incredulous eye-rolls about my name. "

I like her already and don't even know her.

Update: Months later, everyone on social networks and the web are "Mad-Mening" themselves, a fun AMC sponsored Avatar generator. So, who's the artist behind it? You guessed it, Dyna Moe!

The software allows you to customize an icon, a cell phone wallpaper and computer wallpaper, here's mine in all three sizes:

Oh, and then I had to add a laptop and my dog, with the help of photoshop:
