5.5 Designers Make A Modern Cabinet For Collectors

above: All those tacky little knick-knacks, tchotchkes, and whatnots will look a lot nicer if they were placed in this.

Loosely translated from their own words, originally in French:

We (5.5 Designers) created the Meuble à collection (piece of furniture for collections) as a way to immortalize the objects of which we often have difficulty disposing. Ordinarily placed on the mantel, a shelf or buffet, they gradually settle into our environment and we find it difficult to refrain from amassing them. This symptom of the chronic amassing of objects is called 'collecting', an old-fashioned and popular practice in which one gives sentimental value in the context of 'overconsumption'.

Inspired by the small scale 'houses' used to hold perfume bottles, crystal animals and other thingamajigs, this piece of furniture allows you to store and display the objects you covet. It helps to reconcile the passion some have for objects like miniature cars or thimbles with the knowledge that the more that one collects around the house, the more these objects collect dust and take up room.

Material: Made of pine wood, wood-notched niches, bottom in groove.
Dimensions: height:1m98 width:1m90 depth: 24cm.
Color: natural pine.

Product Pick Of The Week: The Stûv 21 Fireplace

Above: The Stûv 21 in rust

I love this fireplace because it's got storage, clean lines and a retractable door! And although it takes up space, it's not an eyesore.

And it comes with different claddings (the surround) so it can suit your interior.

Above: The Stûv in white

How it works

The Stûv 21 makes use of a simple law of physics : natural combustion : air circulates in a double wall (1) around the hearth, heats up and escapes through purpose-built vents (2). One can also route some of that hot air to an adjacent room. So there is no fan, no noise, no risk of a breakdown, no electrical connection. The glass door remains clear : the air required for combustion sweeps the inner face (3) and prevents soot from making it dirty.

Integration into a low volume

Partial raising of the glass door allows the Stûv 21 to be integrated into a low horizontal space.

Limiting the travel of the glass door means the hearth height can be reduced by 15 to 25 cm depending on the model, and the stove can then be inserted into a low horizontal volume and thus break away from the traditional vertical shape.
It can also be inserted into an old fireplace.

Seriously Cute Cable Management from Copenhagen. Meet Woofy.

Earlier this week I wrote a post about cable management and charging stations, but little did I know that one of the cutest forms of cable management was about to hit the market; Woofy for Normann Copenhagen.

Okay, actually I did know it was about to hit the market, only I forgot until I received the invite to the extremely cool launch party in Denmark (see below) for Woofy in black:

Woofy comes in white, this new black edition is a limited release only:

Woofy was designed by Gabriel Nigro (shown below with Woofy) and is made of hardened plastic.

He’s cute, smart and doesn’t bite – normann copenhagen presents your new friend…

Introducing Woofy, our new addition to the normann family. Woofy is a cable container dog with many good qualities, designed by Gabriel Nigro. Woofy is your new friend and a personalised way to conceal cables.

The story of Woofy is one of experiences, of pleasure and love of design. Woofy’s Dad is Gabriel Nigro and the idea for Woofy came about during a visit to one of Gabriel’s friends, who happened to have cables lying around all over his flat. On the way home, Gabriel began drawing, and by the time he was finished Woofy was born.

Woofy never needs to be walked, fed or trained. His fur is smooth and he doesn’t cause allergies or wet the floor. Woofy can conceal your cables in his tummy and he will always be there when you need him.

Dimensions:
Width: 20 cm
Height: 33 cm
Length: 48 cm

Price: $200 USD

Woofy will be sold in stores and online here beginning the end of August 2007.
