Symbio Design Loudspeakers by Jerry Koza: Alpha, Beta & EggO

The Alpha or Alfa (sic):

The design of the Alpha loudspeaker system is based on a baffle made from laminated composite. A bass-reflex tube is made the same way and, after the manufacturing process completion, it becomes an integral part of the baffle.

In addition, the bass-reflex tube orifice shape prevents the turbulence generation with air circulation in the tube, when a higher sound volume is set, which very often adversely affects the systems sound character and brings undesired noises into the performance. The shell is made with laying stress on the standing waves elimination without a single joint, so we eliminated pressure losses. The selected construction provides high shell rigidity with a big inner acoustic attenuation.

Parameters:
number of bands: 2
baffle type: bass-reflex
recommended placement: floor, shelf, in-wall installation, ceiling
total weight of the system: 5.5 kg/piece
max. high 580 mm, max. width 330 mm, max. depth 470 mm
Woofer:
response (1W,1m): 91 dB SPL
frequency characteristics: 40 - 4000 Hz
nominal impedance: 8 Ohm
weight 1,41 kg
long-lasting maximum power 75 W
short-lasting maximum power 250 W
Tweeter :
response (1W,1m): 92 dB SPL
frequency characteristics: 2000 - 25000 Hz
nominal impedance: 6 Ohm
weight 0,5 kg
long-lasting maximum power 90 W
short-lasting maximum power 220 W

The Beta:

Upon customer’s request, it is possible to individually change the standard high-gloss snow-white surface finish, which comes from ALFA, for any other colour of the RAL colour palette. Generally, the model is also supplied in black and silver colour.

The Beta loudspeakers are designed to be put on a table top or any other suitable place, including floor. We are also preparing light in-wall or ceiling installations. The minimalist solution assumes a simple connection to your audio system using the loudspeaker cable, which is the part of delivery.

Wideband loudspeaker system with an enclosed baffle. The system is bedded with two special FDS loudspeakers.

Parameters:
number of bands: 1
baffle type: enclosed baffle
recommended placement: floor, shelf, table, in-wall installation, ceiling
FDS 100-30 loudspeaker

maximum core deviation: +/- 6mm
material of magnet: neodymium
material of basket: ABS
material of diaphragm: paper, TPU
diaphragm diameter: 100 mm
weight: 220 g

The EggO

The EggO is a passive loudspeaker system with a band-pass baffle type bedded with one low-frequency speaker. EggO subwoofer is supplemented with an efficient amplifier. Correction elements of amplifier contain output level and crossover frequency controls.

Parameters:
number of bands: 1
baffle type: band-pass baffle
recommended placement: floor

Marcel Wanders For Holland Electro: WOW

Holland Electro (HE) invited dutch designer Marcel Wanders to create a line of home appliances for them. And boy did he ever!

With the following stunning and functional products, he outdid himself.

Theatre
A wooden side table in which a dvd and speakers are built into the left side and the subwoofer is hidden in the right side. And it comes with four beautifully decorated satellite speakers. 5.1 stereo sound.

Pandora
A small wooden side table in which a woofer is integrated. Accompanied with two wireless speakers, it generates 2.1 stereo sound for music on your laptop or mp3 player.

Egg
The beautifully designed wireless speakers that accompany the Pandora and Theatre

Domino Speaker System
Two beautiful and very thin speakers that can be used with a wireless transmitter (as in the case of the Mathilda and the Merlin) or standard audio cables.

The Mathilda and the Merlin
two antennas that magically send music to your speakers. Merlin has a USB connector and Mathilda has 3.5 plug that uses 3 AAA batteries. Both can be used with the Domino speaker system

The Carrie
A 1 gig USB flash drive

And lastly, the Wave TV. A microwave oven that integrates a TFT screen in the door so you can watch tv while cooking. It even has a built in DVD player!

The Crystal digital photo frame is a nice looking modern digital photo frame that is also part of the collection:

Speaker Manufacturers Turn Up The Volume On Design. 20 Of The Wildest Speakers.

above: The Muon Speakers by Ross Lovegrove for KEF

When I grew up, in the seventies, you basically had few choices when it came to speakers. The average consumer deliberated between JBL or Kenwood while the audiophile went for Cambridge Soundworks, Harman Kardon or Bang & Olufsen. Besides wattage output, your biggest deciding factor was whether or not you wanted wood paneled speakers or all black.

Well, boy has that changed. Speakers are no longer even called "speakers". Now they are 'loudspeakers' or 'sound systems' or even referred to as 'audio output devices.' Made from stainless steel, glass, acrylic, ceramic and more, speakers of every shape and size are popping up. Whether they are floor standing, shelf-sitting, or wall mounted, there's no shortage of unusual designs from which to choose.

Technologically, they are far superior than decades ago. And rather than bog down this blog with technical specs, let me simply share with you some of the designs. Some beautiful, some ....butt ugly. And give you links to the manufacturers so you can drool over the details on your own time.

Let's start with one of the most blogged about speakers (myself included) that were an expected hit at this year's CES.
