Sit On Knits! Custom Upholstered Sweater Chairs By Melanie Porter.

Traditional and modern chairs take on a new dimension when upholstered in the hand-knit textiles of Melanie Porter. From tub chairs to wing chairs, Chippendales to Egg chairs, Melanie painstakingly strips them of their original upholstery and then covers each chair in her hand knit panels of cable knits, patchwork, cross-stitch, and crochet. Details like hand covered buttons, pom pom accents, union jacks, painted frames and color combinations best show off the textiles.

Melanie's chairs are cozy and inviting one-of-a-kind functional art pieces. She even gives them human names, which only add to their appeal. Here's a look at several of her unique chairs.

About Melanie Porter:

After 10 years working as a knitwear designer for a number of international fashion brands, Melanie has turned her expertise to furniture, creating one-off contemporary designs from chairs sourced from auctions and markets across the UK.

Melanie undertakes the entire process herself and everything, from the restoration and upholstering to the individual, crocheted buttons, is done by hand. The result of this incredibly labor-intensive process is a stunning and unique work of art, destined to be a future family heirloom.

About the designer:

Heather’s inspiration comes from examining the ordinary. The collections are based on vintage typography, eye charts and conversation bubbles — images that are instantly identifiable but unexpected on soft goods.

Our current collections are screen printed by hand with water-based ink onto natural-fiber fabrics. All pieces are screen printed and sewn in the U.S.A. Our pillows, place mats, napkins and coasters are printed on one side only.

All pieces are machine-washable in cold water and mild detergent. Avoid harsh detergents as prints will fade. Air dry or tumble dry on low and iron with high heat. Expect 5% shrinkage. Do not dry clean or bleach.

Stitchwitchery By Aubrey Longley-Cook. Sew Cool.

Talented young embroiderer Aubrey Longley-Cook ( who turns 24 tomorrow.. Happy Birthday Aubrey!!!) writes a blog from Atlanta, Georgia named Spool Spectrum on which he posts his own handiwork along with some fabulous textile work from other artists and some kitschy finds. He also sells some of his unique embroidery, each framed in a wood hoop, in a store of the same name as his blog on etsy.

above: Front and back of "Rex"

A self-proclaimed fan of cartoons, animation, cassettes and mix tapes, he is bringing embroidery a long way from its stereotype as a Granny craft.

This particular series of his fun "Stichwitchery" caught my eye:

Undead Thoroughbred:

Coop Spook:

Croaker:

Elephantom:

And more of his other wonderful pieces:

Make A Wish
( a series of embroidered Dragon balls):

Midas:

City In The Trees:

group Duel:

It's In Our Fingerprints:

Baal's Brass Band (embroidery on found fabric):

In addition to his embroidery shown above, he hand stitches cards, and creates many other interesting pieces of textile art.

Check out his blog, Spool Spectrum and his etsy store. I, for one, look forward to seeing more of his work.

About The Artist

Resembling artworks more than conventional fabrics, the contemporary creations produced by the Anne Kyyrö Quinn studio are not textiles as you once knew them. Cut, sewn and finished by hand, our unique choice of luxury natural fabrics are crafted into interior textiles designed to harmonise timelessly with any setting. Each product is conceived as a gesture of simplicity, yet, we make space for bold colours, rich textures and striking motifs.

Anne Kyyrö Quinn’s sculptural approach has pioneered a new genre of interior textiles based on three-dimensional structure rather than smooth surface ornamentation. Our products are based on a portfolio of eighteen core designs inspired by organic shapes and expressed with Scandinavian simplicity. Whether crafted into cushions, throws, table runners, wall panels or blinds, each design has a tactile feel that appeals to the eye as well as to the hand. As we merge twenty-first century design with textures inspired by the natural world, our products bridge the gulf between the urban interior and the natural landscape, and bring an elegant, unassuming beauty into everyday life.

Our commitment to design excellence makes Anne Kyyrö Quinn one of Britain's leading manufacturers of handcrafted interior textiles. Since the studio was established in 1999, our products and bespoke textile services have been distributed internationally to design showrooms and retail outlets, and marketed by independent agents. From our base in London, we provide a consultancy service for special residential or contract projects, working with architects, contractors and interior designers to create tailor-made pieces for a wide range of interior settings. As Anne Kyyrö Quinn’s products continue to gain acclaim in leading interiors around the world, our commitment to quality, innovation and design excellence travels with them.

Anne Kyyrö Quinn also offers a com- mission service to interior designers, architects and private clients. This service offers clients highly individual work that meets specific requirements.
