An Update On The Barceloneta - The Modern, Indoor/Outdoor Version of The Classic Barcelona Chair.

When it was first announced that Serralunga was offering an outdoor/indoor version of the classic and elegant Barcelona Chair that was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and produced by Knoll® in 1929, I brought you the news with computer generated images of prototypes and the then four colors in which it was to be available (shown below).

Since then, Serralunga has produced the lightweight and weatherproof chair (which was designed for them by Italy's Deep Design) and I have actual photography, the technical specs and the five colors in which it is now available.

A beautiful modern, lightweight indoor/outdoor chair option for lovers of modern classic design.

Herman Miller Updates An Eames Classic With Wood. The New Molded Wood Eames Chair.

The Molded Plastic Chair (or Shell chair) that Mid-Century Modern design lovers have grown to covet is the epitome of the Eames process. Since its launch in 1950, details like color and height options, shock mounts, base variations, and use of upholstery have received constant improvements.

Manufacturing processes have been closely monitored and modified. And in the 1990s, when new findings revealed fiberglass-reinforced plastic shells to be less suitable for the environment, Herman Miller explored sustainable solutions and, in 2000, reintroduced the design in 100 percent recyclable polypropylene (shown below).

Now, in 2013, Herman Miller introduces the Eames Molded Wood Chair, a beautiful expression of this timeless design.

Today’s techniques cut wood veneer into small strips and then process them in a way that makes the wood flexible enough to mold into complex curves without splitting or popping. This allows the material to take on the authentic form of the timeless Eames design for the first time as a single wood shell.

Select from three veneers for the wood shell, including white ash, walnut, and santos palisander. Pair it with a choice of three classic bases: wire (often called the "Eiffel Tower") in chrome or black, 4-leg in chrome or black, or wood dowel in one of three finishes.

The Eames Molded Wood Chair’s range of finish and base options allows for 21 different combinations of this new seating—giving you the opportunity to mix and match a unique look for almost any environment.

A beautiful expression in of the timeless design, the Eames Molded Wood Chair honors the organic shapes, sleek lines, and honest materials of Charles and Ray’s classic work—and represents Herman Miller’s longstanding commitment to the Eames vision of continued exploration.

Lightweight and carefully contoured, the shell seats have high, flexible backs, deep seat pockets, and waterfall front edges so you can sit comfortably.

Swiveling glides keep the chair steady and level on uneven floors. The standard glide is also available with felt to protect hard-surface floors.

Learn more here and look for it to be available soon in the Herman Miller Stores.

Gun Chairs (Or New York Chairs) by Sebastian Errazuriz

If you're not familiar with the witty yet urbane works of artist Sebastian Errazuriz, you ought to be. His tongue in cheek objects and installations are compelling and provocative, not to mention unusual. One of his fun projects is his collection of New York Chairs or Gun Chairs.

Fill In The Cat. Negative Space Furnishings from NEL.

I'd already posted about their dog-like furniture (Pack of Dogs teak shelves) when I spotted this project by NEL, the collective of Mexican designers. A study in negative space, Fill In The Cat consists of chairs, shelves and ottomans from which three characters have been removed from large white blocks.

The resulting emptiness is filled with the user's belongings and through this action the silhouettes' meaning shifts. The pieces suggest a continuous play between interaction and representation, where daily use generates a continuously changing story: a cat that reads Italo Calvino, a book filled with coins, a living room where birds come to eat the cake's crumbles…

FILL IN THE CAT
Year: 2006
Participants: Ricardo Casas, Héctor Esrawe, Emiliano Godoy, Cecilia León de la Barra, Óscar Núñez

About NEL
NEL is a platform for experimentation formed by an evolving collective of Mexican designers. The collective, founded in 2004, serves as a channel tocreate and exhibit projects that focus on the conceptual and playful side of design. The organic nature of the collective allows for an ever changing pool of designers, which in turn generates a wide variety of projects that range from political statements to playful storytelling or aesthetic explorations.

The members of NEL are Ricardo Casas (1979), Alejandro Castro (1983), Héctor Esrawe (1968), Emiliano Godoy (1974) and Cecilia León de la Barra (1975).

Gold Balloons and Glass Top Coffee Table. The UP Coffee Table by Duffy London.

Duffy London design studio introduces the UP Coffee Table, a whimsical table with glass table top held up by gold glass and metal resin composite 'balloons' with steel rods as the 'balloon strings' and doubling as support.

Working with the illusion of levitation and buoyancy, the UP coffee table is a playful trompe l’oeil, giving the impression that a piece of glass is being suspended by small balloons.

This hand made table is a limited edition of twenty. Because it is designed without compromise, the tables are extremely time consuming to create.
