Montblanc Unveil's Two-Faced Watch, The Metamorphosis

above: The Montblanc Metamorphosis in action

One of the most talked about and exciting new watches at this year's SIHH was Montblanc's TimeWriter 1: Metamorphosis. One watch, that through methods from the art of automaton construction, changes into another watch, right before your eyes.

By moving a slide down or up, this timepiece changes from a wristwatch with hour, minute, second display to a chronograph and vice versa.

TimeWriter I: One watch – two faces

The first watch of the TimeWriter series, the Metamorphosis, is based on the Montblanc chronograph calibre MBM 16.29 and derives its name from its unique dual functions and faces: By moving a slide down or up, the Metamorphosis changes from simple time indication to a chronograph and vice versa.

The first face: The Classic Time
In the standard timekeeping mode, the watch displays hours, minutes and date and has a rather conservatively elegant appearance with Roman numerals in classic silver and black colours. The lower half of the dial displays an unusual circular date display.

A sliding mechanism starts the transformation process of the watch: By pressing the slide on the left-hand flank from “10” to “8” the watch starts with its metamorphosis process that lasts approximately 15 seconds and magically transforms it from the time indicating mode into a chronograph.

The second face: The Chronograph
The metamorphosis itself can best be compared to a scene change at the theatre: wings of the dial open up, slide under one another, and disappear to the left and right beneath the middle section of the dial.

After the transformation, this masterpiece of mechanical timekeeping presents a face devoted entirely to the chronograph function. Emphasising the watch’s second function as a sports timer, the face displays Arabic numerals with red markers. The subdial, in the form of a rotating disc, now takes the stage as the minute counter. The existing hands and dials assume new roles as part of the chronograph.

The two inventors, Johnny Girardin and Franck Orny, came up with the idea of a timepiece that could literally and mechanically change its appearance before our very eyes. For over a year, they worked alongside the designers and watchmakers in the Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie to transform their initial idea into a watch.

Although the principle of a watch with different functions is nothing entirely new, the way in which the Montblanc Metamorphosis transforms itself from one watch face to the other, has never been seen before. It is a highly complex process, involving 50 individual components that move technically synchronously. The mechanisms involved in this process are so new and innovative (The complication adds 315 extra parts to the original 252 parts of the Minerva Kaliber 16-29 hand-wound movement) that they’ve been registered for patent.

The Metamorphosis watch will only be available in a limited edition of 28 pieces. Price is still unknown as of yet.

The press release:
The launch of the exclusive timepiece, an elegant accessory for the discerning Infiniti customer and the watch collector, marks the collaboration of two brands which are synonymous across the globe with exceptional performance, craftsmanship, precision, and modern luxury.

The special edition BR03-92 Phantom Instrument has been designed by Bell & Ross to commemorate the recently revealed Infiniti FX Limited Edition performance crossover, restricted, just like the watches, to only 100 individually-numbered examples worldwide. However, such has been the extensive demand prior to the release of the watch, that only a handful remain.

The parallels from the fusion of Infiniti and Bell & Ross are clearly evident in the appearance of the piece. The black carbon powder finish, which encapsulates the 42 mm case, resembles the graphite finish applied to many exterior parts of the Infiniti FX Limited Edition and is just as beautifully-crafted. The seconds hand which sits on a galvanic black dial, is lined with a distinct purple coating, the same colour which lies at the heart of Infiniti’s brand identity, and can be seen everywhere from the instruments of the car to furnishings inside the Infiniti Centre.

Whilst on the move, it is all about the ownership experience which is personal and exclusive: the rear of each the 100 pieces has been engraved with the Infiniti signature and is complemented by an individual number of the edition within the BR03-92 Instrument Phantom Infiniti series.

Jim Wright, Vice President Infiniti Europe, explains: “The limited edition BR03-92 Instrument Phantom watch is a perfect tribute to the core qualities of Infiniti. It is also about offering the Infiniti owner something truly special and individual which we are able to achieve through this exceptional timepiece.”

The BR03-92 Instrument Phantom Infiniti watch goes on sale on 01 June 2010 at a recommended retail price of €3,300, and is available for purchase from all European Infiniti Centres. For their locations which range from Barcelona to Bucharest, see www.infiniti.eu.

Cartier's Surprisingly Hip Launch
For Their Latest Watch

While I've always been a fan of Cartier, especially their watches, I wouldn't have described them as a hip company or a cutting edge company or even a company in touch with an audience under 40 years of age.

However, their fabulous, artful and beautifully illustrated launch of their newest watch, the Ballon Bleu has changed my mind.

By creating a microsite that showcases six different comic book writers/illustrators' work as well as seven Ninth Art writers in an unusual visual odyssey they have made me re-examine my previous notion of this luxury jewelry and watch manufacturer.

I can hardly do the entire site justice without reproducing it, so let me just share a few of the illustrations and a few frames of the comics and let you experience the entire thing for yourself.

Click on the images below so you can see them larger and appreciate the art.

Above: six different illustrations, each showcasing the blue cabochon in a different visual interpretation.

Above: 3 different examples of partial comic strips written about the watch

Of course, the watch is stunning. It's most notable feature, the large blue cabochon sapphire winding mechanism incorporated into the bezel and open on both sides. Followed by the unusual slightly rounded shape of the front and back of the face.

Like most of Cartier's bracelet watches it's available in 18k yellow, pink or white gold (with or without diamonds) and 18k yellow gold combined with stainless steel (no diamonds).

So, in addition to tempting me with yet another stunning horological adornment, Cartier's microsite has captured my eye as well and I wonder if they've produced hard copies of these 'stories'.

Most surprisingly of all, I must declare, Cartier is hip.
