Regal Whimsy: The King Edison Pendant Lamp by Young & Battaglia

Designed by Young & Battaglia, the King Edison pendant lamp combines whimsy with functionality. A tiny functioning chandelier is suspended inside a hand blown clear glass bulb with satin chrome fittings and hung on a braided silken cable.

The name, King Edison, is tongue-in-cheek nod to the regal design of the chandelier and the lightbulb's original inventor. The piece is made in England by Mineheart, the design consultant company and online store launched by Brendan Young and Vanessa Battaglia in 2010.

Pride of Soldiers, A Scabetti Sculpture in A Highly Secure Military Location.

'Pride of Soldiers', this unique three meter diameter sculptural light commissioned for the Land Forces Command Head Quarters in Utrecht, has rarely been seen before due to its highly secure location.

The newly erected Kromhout Barracks (which are really beautifully designed) stand on the outskirts of Utrecht and were designed by leading Dutch practice Meyer en Van Schooten Architects.

Dominic and Frances Bromley's unique commission, Pride of Soldiers, will only ever be seen by strict invitation. These photographs (by Frances Bromley, Jannes Linders and Stefan Van Weelden) are now the only access many will have to this remarkable work of art, as it is sited in one of the most secure places in the Netherlands; the Royal Dutch Land Forces Command Head Quarters.

Installed in the Netherland's new Kromhout Barracks outside of Utrecht, this beautiful bone china sculpted light serves as a monument to the Armed Forces. The unique piece, comprised of many stylized soldiers hanging vertically to form a sphere, was crafted by Dominic and Frances Bromley of Scabetti.

The ceramic forms are slip cast fine bone china, cast by hand in the Potteries of Stoke-on-Trent:

The piece stands an impressive three meters in diameter hovering over a large table within the barrack's conference room.

Progressing around the room there's an extra dimension that reveals itself; each soldier stands in perfect formation and comes together to create the Lion of the Armed Forces emblem, with the central light at its heart.

Designing a piece so dramatic and specific to the location was a brave move for the accomplished duo and combined their unique technical and artistic approach. Pride of Soldiers must surely stand as the Bromley's most significant work to date.

The Standard Hotel has announced a Limited Edition series of light bulbs designed specifically for them by artist KAWS. This is the first time KAWS has created an item so unique compared to his existing body of work which includes the highly coveted toys, shoes, T-shirts, wallets, etc.

“I love The Standard and the different projects they have been doing” shares KAWS, “when invited to create something I wanted to redesign something basic that could be found in every hotel room in the world so we decided to make a light bulb.”

*Sadly these sold out very quickly and now can be found for exorbitant prices on eBay. However, I bet they end up producing more.

Once Homes To Dolls, Now Modern Light Fixtures.

Artist Peter Waltz builds houses. But not the kind you live in, the kind you live with.

Peter has been working with found objects like Electrolux vacuums, old PA speakers, even hanging planter baskets, for many years, but it was his series of House Lights that captured my attention.

With a BFA from Tyler school of art in Philadelphia, Peter says he was always searching for items that can be transformed, reworked and renewed. Especially items that could serve as a vessel for light. Then came the houses.

"When I work with them, they tell a certain story about how they need to "remodeled". Whether it be maintaining the original paint, forcing them to rust, or polishing to a steel finish, they are all different. I guess these days I'm the only one in the country that can still "flip" a house." Peter writes, undoubtedly with a smile.

His House Lights, which can be wall mounted or used as table lamps, are mini mid-century suburban style vintage dollhouses. The ranch homes, two story homes or split level homes beg to be explored. With little patios, dormers, and multi pane windows they have the charm of a 'home sweet home' with the edginess of a modern art piece - and a functional one at that.

I believe some to be the actual tin litho homes by Marx, T. Cohn and Wolverine Supply & Mfg.Co which are shown below:

Below is a T. Cohn tin litho home as originally appeared and after Peter's treatment and wiring:

And with his process of forced rusting or polishing, he turns them into functional finds that cast beautiful shafts of light and shadow. Just take a look.

close ups and details:

Prices range from $300.00 to $700.00 USD. I suggest you buy one of his homes before you can't afford them. If still available, prices and more information can be found at Peter's site here.
