The Drink Chair, By Ingid Michel & Frederic Pain, Holds Your Butt and Your Booze.

above: the Drink Chair by Ingid Michel & Frederic Pain, France

The sculptural fiberglass and wood Drink Chair by Ingid Michel and Frederic Pain of Binome Design is perfect for the stylish imbiber. With an extended armrest that is cast to include three imprints, sized perfectly for a bottle and two glasses, the modern looking chair is the combination of comfort and convenience.

The molded resin and fiber glass seat perches on 4 wooden branches which serve as the legs. The varied shapes of the wooden legs lend an individual character to each chair, no two can ever be exactly the same. Selected from the branches of the Robinia tree, the wood is extremely hard, resistant to rot and prized for its durability.

The chair body is UV resistant, making Drink the perfect choice indoors or out. Handmade in the Binome studio in France.

Materials: fiber glass, laquered resin, robinia wood
Options: standard colors red, black, white + all RAL colors made to order

About Binome:
Since their meeting in 1994 Ingrid Michel and Frederic Pain have collaborated with artists, sculptors and architects on projects in areas as diverse as cinema, design and contemporary art.

Graduates of the prestigious Ecole Boulle, Paris, their focus on traditional wood sculpture is the base which has allowed them to confidently use wood in a contemporary context.

In 2008 they created their own studio under the name Binome. Each piece created by the studio is crafted by hand and retains a singularity as no two are exactly alike. Design which is both visual and tactile, the aim of Binome is to create furniture which retains its sculptural essence.

Binome studio is located in Saint Pierre le Moûtier, France.

A short history of flexible design :
Over the course of history, from the age of the Egyptians up to that of Napoleon, a folding chair has always been seen as an object of status and beauty. In recent times this focus has shifted. This is a pity; especially in today’s world the concept of folding has so much to offer!

above: Flux founder Douwe Jacobs and industrial designer Tom Schouten

"A folding chair not only saves valuable floor space and makes moving a breeze, more importantly it allows you to sit down wherever you like. The beach, the park, you name it! Add to that the fact that it’s easy to send by mail, and thus drastically reducing CO2 emissions when transported efficiently in bulk, and you can see why in a modern world foldable furniture is as relevant as it ever was.

Keeping this in mind and being inspired by folded paper sculptures, I folded a tiny, elegant, paper scale model of a chair. Even though it was just a simple cut-out from a single sheet of paper, it was surprisingly strong. And even better: it didn’t look like anything I’d ever seen before!

Early 2009, I and fellow industrial designer Tom Schouten founded our company. We called it Flux, referring to change and the words flexible and luxury. Since then, we have put all our energy into turning this small paper model into our first fully-fledged flexible design: the Flux Chair.

Our goal is to create a new generation of furniture and associated living items; so stay tuned for more flexible designs from Flux!" -- Douwe Jacobs, Founder/Inventor of Flux

White Fiberglass Skull Chair By Pool.

This simple, modern white fiberglass skull chair, by Léa Padovani & Sébastien Kieffer of Pool, made its debut at the 2011 Milan Furniture Fair.

"Souviens toi que tu vas mourir, chair” (translated :"Remember that you will die") is described by the designers as "an emblematic monobloc chair reinterpreted as an expression of vanity. This memento mori represented by a skull acts as a leitmotiv for those who seek the comfort of a chair and the ceremonial act of being seated."

TRON Armchair Now Mass-Produced For Cappellini In 4 Colors & New Material.

In 2010 Cappellini And Walt Disney Signature Presented A Special Production Series of The TRON Armchair Designed By Dror Benshetrit For Design Miami 2010.

above: The prototype for Disney. Raw Data forms a jagged and angular landscape, serving as a muse for a chair that is comprised of intersecting layers and textures of 'digital' rock. Constructed of composite material consisting of impregnated fiberglass with polyester resin processed with manual layering, these Special Production Walt Disney Signature TRON Armchairs invite you to "sit off the grid."

You may have read about these on such design sites as Core 77, Curated Mag and Design Milk. Their reports showed the Special Production Walt Disney Signature TRON Armchairs made of fiberglass and in gritty and unusual paint jobs such as these:

Initially made as a series of four “one-off” fibreglass prototypes, when it came to mass production Cappellini and Poltrona Frau went with four new colors and 100% recyclable material.

Giulio Cappellini plays on the contrasts suggested by the film; the contrast between the real world and the world of TRON:Legacy. Natural elements embody this juxtaposition, so the dark grey of the “stone”, and the white of the “air” represent the landscape of Tron and the safe house, while the light blue of “water” and the green of the “grass” represent the real world:

Conceived from the futuristic world of the Disney film “TRON: Legacy” and designed by Dror Benshetrit of Studio Dror, the Tron Armchair is a product profoundly inspired by material with features that are reminiscent of the rugged and rocky landscape which surrounds the digital world of TRON. Initially made as a series of four “one-off” fibreglass prototypes individually hand-finished by New York designer Dror Benshetrit (shown below in the chair).

Using the roto-molding technique, made of 100% recyclable material and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the armchair is now available in four different colors.

Designer Benshetrit talks about the mass-produced TRON Chair at the Milan Design Village, 2011:
