The Skull Workstation Is One Funky Fiberglass Office Pod From Atelier van Lieshout.

The AVL (Atelier van Lieshout) Skull is a strikingly designed one-person workstation made of a polyester fiberglass shell with a built in wooden bench and desktop on the interior.

The object shows unmistakeable resemblance to the so-called Skull Rooms that Atelier van Leishout designed at the end of the nineties. This is from the same designer who also brought us the Wellness Skull and the Sensory Deprivation Skull. The AVL Skull is build out of two polyester skull parts, which are ‘riveted’ to each other with bolts.

On the inside a solid wood work surface and a seat have been mounted, which are accessible via a small opening in the one side.

Once inside, the user is closed off from the outside world, just like in the Skull Rooms, and can work on tasks that require more concentration. The light falls inside through a narrow entrance and a ‘porthole’ on the other side.

About The Designer:

Joep van Lieshout of AVL is one of the most successful and best-selling artists in the Netherlands. He is known for its huge 'human' objects of colored polyester, like a womb, a penis or intestines. Van Lieshout was born in Brabant (1963, Ravenstein) but AVL studio is located in Rotterdam.

Smart & Stylish Modular Housing. The House Arc By Bellamo Architects.

The House Arc is a modular off-the-grid housing solution where the pieces are shipped (ideally, fabricated locally) to the site and erected by the user or community. The future goal of the House Arc is to house people in devastated areas after catastrophic events and replace housing that was not built to withstand such forces.

The House Arc could be utilized in locations where natural disasters have displaced people, such as Haiti and New Orleans. Hopefully, organizations dedicated to finding the most affordable off-the-grid modular housing solutions will consider the House Arc.

The first House Arc was permanently installed on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2010 (a time lapse video of that construction can be seen at the end of this post.) Large windows provide natural light, maintain views, and funnel in ocean breezes to cool the interior while the shading trellis limits heat infiltration.

The raised structure allows air to flow underneath for cooling, functions with the site terrain, and maintains the permeability of the site.

The House Arc’s simple and modular design allows it to be assembled extremely quickly. Construction assembly is much like building modular furniture with a kit of parts and an easy-to-follow, graphic installation manual requiring no special training.

Check Out The Tetra Shed. A Modern Modular Office Pod Available Next Month.

A Mod pod that rocks. Available as of January 2012 is yet another modular office pod from the UK (they are big on garden sheds and modular pods). The tetra shed® by architect David Ajasa-Adekunle of Innovation Imperative is a new modular building system which, as a single module, has been designed to be a modern garden office.

The tetra shed® is available with external finishes in any RAL colour or clad in either copper, zinc, corten steel or marine plywood.

Inside, the tetra-shed can be internally lined in either birch faced plywood or plasterboard.

A double module layout has also been designed to create a larger office for larger gardens.

Clusters of up to 6 modules have primarily been designed as additional work, rest and play space for homes. Larger tessellations can be used for a range of applications such as classrooms, exhibition space, corporate events, tourism & leisure facilities and retail space. Designed to exceed the building regulations, tetra shed® is suitable for permanent year-round use.

The Archipod. Round and Radical Prefab Office Space.

In the interest of fairness (and interesting blogging), I've featured a fabulous Polyhedron shaped office and garden pod, so now, I have to give some press to this wonderful round one!

The Archipod is a prefabricated red cedar shingle-clad insulated structure that opens with a gullwing door. The spherical unit is complete with a built in ergonomic desk, drawers , porthole windows and skylight and is wired with dimmable lights, an electric heater, outlets, a phone line and even a smoke alarm!

The Archipod has a porthole window which allows the natural light to come in and one can order special custom drawers and hardwood veneered desktops. Carpet is also available by request.

The gullwing front door, which has gas strut assistance, comes with a push handle and deadlock:

The curved built in desk measures just over 10 feet and is available in 30 different colors of Marmoleum® linoleum:

The structure is prefabricated in sections that are sized to allow all the parts to be carried through a house, so it doesn’t matter where you live, we will be able to get the ‘Pod’ into your back garden.

Because of its unique shape and the generous natural light from the roof dome, the ‘Pod’ actually looks bigger on the inside than the outside.
