Great Pet Portraits Capture Goofy and Gorgeous: Furtographs

There's no shortage of adorable images of dogs and cats on the internet these days. Pinterest, Tumblr and Facebook are loaded with them. But not all of them are as well composed or attractive as those done by photographer/artist Andy Stolarek of Los Angeles. His in-home and on-location shots of people's dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, pigs and more other capture beast and beauty in one image.

Simultaneously goofy and gorgeous, poignant and personality-laden, Furtographs offer two in-studio options or will travel to your city by request.

The images work nicely in residences, offices, private and public spaces:

About Furtographs:

Classically trained in bassoon performance and visual art from University of Southern California and California Institute of the Arts, photographer/artist Andy Stolarek (shown above) began to work with animals in 2000. First working with taxidermy and the study of anthropomorphism, Stolarek examined organized groups and document the specific elements that bring the collectives together through narrative gallery installations.

On a drive to San Francisco in 2003, Stolarek came upon his first pedigree cat championship. This discovery began his photographic series ‘Grimalkin’ which focused on the niche arena of feline pageantry and competition. As his work progressed, he began to photograph the animals of friends and family, initializing Furtographs. With his unique aesthetic for portraiture, capturing each animal in an unconventional and dramatic manner became Stolarek’s Furtographs focus.

Furtographs home base studio is located in the Loft at The Urban Pet at 7515 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. In addition to working throughout Southern California, Furtographs often works in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and your city by request.

Maddie The Coonhound Is Finally Bound And The Book Is Out.

I first introduced you to the talented balancing Coonhound named Maddie and her owner/photographer Theron Humphrey a ways back with 33 fabulous images.  In that post I said the photos were begging to be a book and knew it would not be long before Maddie was atop shelves in bookstores as well as atop various items and objects.

Maddie is a sweet-tempered dog who has accompanied her owner, Theron, on a yearlong, cross-country trip while he worked on a photojournalism project. In his spare time, Theron took photos of Maddie doing what she does best: standing on things.

From bicycles to giant watermelons to horses to people, there really isn't anything that Maddie won't stand on with grace and patience.

The beautifully photographed and compelling images of Maddie are now bound into a hardcover book. The poignant Instagram photos of this beautiful dog and her offbeat poses have captured the imagination of all those who long for a road trip with a good dog for company. Maddie on Things celebrates the strange talent of one special dog and will resonate with any dog lover who appreciates the quirky hearts (and extraordinary balance) of canines.

So why sloths?
Below was the video that started it all off. Filmed at the world's only sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica it has now become a cult hit, has been tweeted by Ricky Gervaise, Ashton Kutcher, Stephen Fry and *obsessed over by Kristen Bell. You can catch the full length, award-wining 'Meet the Sloths' documentary on Animal Planet in the US and UK.

Together, between their two instagram accounts, they have shared photos on alternating days of Turbo balancing Christmas items on his head.

Photographed on the same formica flooring (all except for one image) with Christmas lights strewn at his feet, Turbo, who is crazy cute, manages to balance everything from Bumble, The Abominable Snowman to a porcelain teapot on his little black and white head and snout.

No tape, glue, wax or any assistance is used. Turbo, who turned 3 on August 5th, has pure talent and has been balancing things on his head since both began their instagram accounts. Earlier images show the treat as motivation on his snout, but as time passed Turbo didn't need the treat for his fantastic feats.

I was so happy to stumble upon these images, quite accidentally and now am thrilled to share them with you.
